i wouldn't mind that at all, just dunno if i have the screen real estate space. only have one monitor right now, but i AM trying to save up for sumphin sorta espensive, so mebbe software would cover me for now.

Yes, that linked tool can do more stuff than what you need, but that amounts to getting the settings correct for your needs and then just ignoring the rest of the controls. Hell, a CRT converted into a music visualizer will fill your need.

The seeed one is good enough. Got it off Amazon for $60 and soldered jacks to the included spliced wire. It's a little fiddly to get it dialed in, but its fine once you figure it out. Screenshots and all that too. The leads are just a test cable. I think there are custom firmwares that make it less of a pita.
I have it so it can work on a pedal board (usually with some kind of splitter).
I got my tektronix online for like 80$ and 25$ shipping via some of those aviation liquidators. Frequency generators can be had for cheap as dirt too.
