Re: Another thread in search of delay recommendations
Had a lo fi 616 ages ago. Was fucking rad.
Had a Supa Puss after that, which was a game ender for options (trails), but didnt sound as good.
Honestly, the Limbo III (compact if you wanna downsize) is what you want. No trails, but features up the arse, sound quality thats second to none (if you like your delays old and crusty DMM like) and the software/cv control are going to pair madballs with future 80 tape and lightning wave stuff (because Jonny and Lee are fucking geniuses).
Order direct from Jonny and soak up the fresh NZ air when you open the box.
Worth every cent.

Re: Another thread in search of delay recommendations
DE-2w doesn't net the same ballpark of the RE-20's oscillations, different type is modelled on the RE-20 (tape crazy versus BBD crazy), and won't net the particular depth of stuff.
In terms of stuff that sounds *like* the Space Echo, it's been something I've chased for twenty-some years. RE-20 was it other than my big box original - I can get *close* with an old Quadraverb+ but that's because it is one of the very very very few delays that lets you set different feedback for each tap along with adjust minutiae. It *does not* self-oscillate though and is a 25-some year old rack toy.

Re: Another thread in search of delay recommendations
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Delay isn't something I use all the time (not a "core" sound for me) which is why I'm reluctant to splash on something that does it all. I got my RE20 for about two-thirds the regular secondhand price and I wasn't gonna pay any more for it! I need to try some out in a shop soon. Or I might just get a DBA echo master to cover up my crappy singing and the re20 can mask my shitty playing.

DE7 for a cheap RE20 replacement.

Re: Another thread in search of delay recommendations
Super cheap and not super durable: DE-7
Cheap and super undurable: ES-2
I'll second the DM-2W and Super/Echo Puss recommendations, based on specs/clips, they seem to meet most of your requirements, even though obviously neither of them is really an RE-20 clone.
NOT the same type of delay as what you're describing, but really giving me serious GAS atm: DOD RUbberneck, EHX Canyon...
I'm changing delay pedals as often as I change my underwear, so I'll keep on eye on this thread to see what others come up with. I'm not so much into pricey booteek stuff anymore, I'm kinda challenging myself to find what I'm looking for in the 100-160ish (euro) range.

I'm on my second DE7 (stupidly sold the first one) and I have never had any durability issues with either one.

I adore the AD9, one of my all time favorites. The only drawback is the fairly short delay time—the AD999 gives you the same sound with a little more.

Ya. Wouldn't say the 999 gives you the same sound, though, but they're not vastly different.popvulture wrote:I adore the AD9, one of my all time favorites. The only drawback is the fairly short delay time—the AD999 gives you the same sound with a little more.
You need to get on dat AD-80 as well.

Re: Another thread in search of delay recommendations
I'm not sure what the UK or European pedal resale market is like, but I wouldn'tMechaGodzilla wrote:$200 usually translates to £200 once it's made it's way here. Something I can pick up secondhand/cheap in the uk is ideal (...). It'd be nice if the waza delays would flood the used market soon.
expect a "flood" of used Boss DM-2w pedals hitting the used market. These pedals
seem to have a good assortment of features for a pretty low price already. The
recreation of the original DM-2 is good, and the "Waza'd" setting adds functionality.
Before the DM-2w came out, the Maxon options were a much more prominantly
obvious choice. If you want more delay time, the 999 is still a great option.
There is also the Moog MF-Delay. Not sure how much that is in the UK, but if you
can find one, it is worth a listen and a test run in person.
If you can find an Ibanez DE-7, that is a fantastic option. The upcoming (and therefore
not cheap) DOD Rubberneck might offer the ability to place a modulation pedal in
the loop to achieve some delay sounds approximating the gurn and churn of the RE-20.
I got my Boss RE-20 a few years ago for $150 Canadian, which is by all measures a solid deal.
The guy I bought it from later picked up another RE-20 because, you know, it's a fucking awesome
pedal. I don't find the size of the RE-20 to be an impediment. It is smaller than the original Roland
Space Echo units and is not fragile or prone to breaking down/needing recalibration/new tapes.
And the RE-20 is far cheaper than a real tape delay (even if not quite as "magical").
If you are looking for innovative and whacky delays, there are plenty new options (not always cheap).
If you want useful, straightforward bucket brigade delays, there are some nice modern options (the
DM-2w is an affordable-ish option).
The Digitech Obscura might be a good digital delay to get. It has a couple sound options, some good
features, and is compact. It isn't "boutique" and so probably more affordable than other options.
Good luck!

Re: Another thread in search of delay recommendations
The BE got flipped, too similar to the re20 but not as nice oscillation. I'm gonna try and find a cheap aqua puss or CC, but I'm really fascinated by all the options on the supa puss.
