The Accountant for me, it's always on, second last in the (main/right amp) chain, pad 1, ratio 0, usually.

Yeah tbh I think that's the best use for the HM2. For the gainier stuff it does, I'd rather just use the Elements.Brandsmannen wrote:Hell yes dude. That's like my favorite thing. I think most of the ones that come immediately to mind are OD/preamp type of pedals.
Definitely PDF-1 / 2 (I have the 1, want the 2)
Lotus Snowjob
SHO
EQD Speaker Cranker
HM-2 with gain all the way down
Also like using slow modulation that just gives everything a subtle movement / sheen. Really liked the WVMKII for this, but sold it because that was just about the only thing I used it for. In general apply that to any mod: univibe, flange (want a Spectre badly), phase, Gen Loss.
But that low gain sound is special

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
Got lots of stuff that can do subtle in interesting ways. I play a lot of country, jazz, roots, etc, live in addition to rackety things, so pedals that can just bring different colors get a good bit of use.
RC Booster
Throbak ODB (Colorsound OD clone) in Silicon mode before it starts clipping
Zoom Power Drive
Hotwire FA-1 clone
Demo Tape Fuzz with gain off
Germanium 4 Muff on the OD side
Emma Onomatopoeia (criminally underrated/unknown pedal)
Buffer/boost on the Lehle Volume
HAO Rumble Mod.
I pretty much leave the RC on every board and never turn it off, swap others in depending on what I need.

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
I use a VFE* White Horse Compressor for 3 reasons
1) Most relevant here really - --like those preamps in the OP, it adds a little upper harmonic sparkle.
2) it has a bass roll off knob, intended to deal with the low end overreaction to the compression, but works neatly in lieu of an eq to keep the sound not muddy in any less than idea room.
3) oh ya, as a compressor. :P
*Also check out their Red Horse Fuzz!!!!

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
I just got one today and it's straight on the board as a dirty boost/eq role. It sounds so good when it's truly dirty that I might move it up the chain and find something else to boost (like an SHO clone or rangemaster).vidret wrote:I think the hive-mind answer is going to be ss/be mini.

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
I have my McSpunckle And Aardvarks! on all the time as a sort of pre-amp, I've found it makes my Tele sound more... Tele-ish. Think that Springsteen/old-school outlaw country tone on the bridge pickup. My Dispatch Master is also on all the time because I'm a reverb junkie - it's now got to the point where no signal goes through the pedal at all if I switch it off. Perhaps the footswitch has a certain amount of pride and is upset at never being used?

Mini
This course, a perpetual alternation of determining what is true, and then setting aside this determining, constitutes, strictly speaking, the steady everyday life and activity of perpetual consciousness, a consciousness which fancies itself to be moving in the realm of truth.

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
I'm liking the Keeley 30ms double tracker for this purpose. Couple it with some subtle dimension mod and it's bliss, especially with gain. Makes everything sound bigger and pop out more with clarity, which for clangy dissonant playing can be super rad.
Demo Tape Fuzz with the gain off is also a good mention. Still a lot of character, but with a ton of EQ shaping.

I had a friend make me a LPB clone with rotary knobs for the input and output resistors to mess with the tone. It'll boost anything, with lots of control over frequencies. Also TC Spark Boost (regular clean boost with a couple of switchable mid-boost options). And BAT Black Forest.

i use the Mooer Yellow Comp (Diamond Compressor clone) and a Skreddy Dynamic Mids Enhancer for this purpose.

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
I built a EP-booster clone last week. Tried it a few different places in the signal chain and ended up putting it after all dirt as an always on boost to push the amp(Traynor YBA-1) a little. Now I have an awesome clean tone and the dirt pedals sounds beefier too!

Re: Final touches/subtle pedals
Space Echo preamp (whether in the actual big box tape monster, or the digital, or one of the clones of the pre) plus Boss GL-100 rack, and I'm there.
Space Echo does all the right things to the right spots, and the dual parametrics and switchable A/B channels on the GL-100 make it all gel together well.
