But then you either have to use 3 of the 4 effects blocks on eqing the nastiness out of the oscillators, or you combine all three into one eq and lose the ability to add effects to each oscillator individually. Having a different effect on each oscillator was a big part of the appeal for me.lumena wrote:chrisdermo wrote:As with the other '9' series pedals it's probably got about 50% usable sounds for me. Also it seems to suffer from the same trebly harshness in the oscillators that the Boss SY300 has. Nonetheless I will probably have to try it out!
I have the SY300 the cure for the harshness is putting one of the fx blocks after the oscillators and using the EQ block.
You can tune the tones quick and easy that way.

EHX really did pick out most of my least favorite crappy 80s synth sounds, though. Maybe they're holding back on the Bernie Worrell version or something.

The fact that they crammed Flashlight into the demo is a sign that they think they've done their duty to the Mothership.

That's about it. I'm actually really into the series, gonna pick up one eventually. But it's not because they sound the way they are supposed to.UglyCasanova wrote:Like with the rest of the 9-series, I can tell what sound they're trying to recreate, but they all sound a bit shit in the demo. I'm sure it would be awesome to run into other effects though.

I totally hear that and the sy300 is not cheap but the more I play with it the more little tricks I learn.chrisdermo wrote:But then you either have to use 3 of the 4 effects blocks on eqing the nastiness out of the oscillators, or you combine all three into one eq and lose the ability to add effects to each oscillator individually. Sometimes using the highpass filter on the lowerpitched oscillator and the lowpass on the upperone can really round the mix. It has lots of possibilities and having presets so you can save and recall makes it really much more practical for complex distortions and such.

Oh yeah totally, I'm not saying it's garbage (although it probably seems that way). It is EXTREMELY powerful in the right hands, but it has a fairly steep learning curve and I feel like it needs too much fixing and sweet spot finding, if they'd spent a little more time doing market research and beta testing beyond people who want to sound like Pat Metheny it would have been more widely adopted by now. Ultimately the reason I sold mine was because I was spending so much damn time programming the thing and no time being creative and writing with it. Also I felt like if it was one of 2/3 pedals in a setup it would be a lot more useful and I wouldn't mind dedicating so much time to it, but I didn't find it played well with my other stuff so much.lumena wrote:I totally hear that and the sy300 is not cheap but the more I play with it the more little tricks I learn.chrisdermo wrote:But then you either have to use 3 of the 4 effects blocks on eqing the nastiness out of the oscillators, or you combine all three into one eq and lose the ability to add effects to each oscillator individually. Also I feel it isn't good enough to warrant the pricetag. I paid £340 for mine compared to the £570 retail price, and even that felt too steep.

Yeah, the instant lofi junky and the generation loss can do wonders for such a pedal, too.Dandolin wrote:Yes, that's the way--just a little fuzzy od and eq post 9 series can make a big difference; start throwing on filters, adsr, Polytope it--it gets pretty nice, with the Mel9, at least.UglyCasanova wrote:I'm sure it would be awesome to run into other effects though.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.
