Final touches/subtle pedals

Post by The4455 »

Hey, hello, hi. We all know that fuzz is the best and that having a gain knob is pointless because it should only be set to 11 but, I am also curious what pedals you guys use in a more subtle way. Specifically eq, boosters, filters, pre-amps, etc...Brian May and Tony Iommi both used range masters, many people used the echoplex pre-amp, gilmour had the binson preamp as a subtle part of his chain. I am looking for something of the like, bonus if it's DIY.

Ive been trying a PDF-1 recently and so far it mostly only makes things better and louder. A lil boost in the low mids

I'm currently using my distortion+ w/ LED clipping as a booster because it's a swiss army pedal that can work in any situation. I'd like an SHO for that job.

Scoop lol you're a funny dude.

PDF-1, better and louder is exactly right.

I used to have a ss/bs sparkle motion (rangemaster with more knobs) and that was really good, kinda miss it sometimes. Must make myself a rangemaster some time...

For me this sort of thing is really not that great unless it's into an amp turned up real loud. To kick it over the edge into overdrive or if it's maxed out already to hit crazy town.

I really liked the Henretta EP-1 which is the Echoplex preamp. Now I use the lo-fi delay and tube comp in my Line 6 M9 all the time. the Tube Comp is on a fixed setting that I saved in every M9 space 1B. The lo-fi delay I keep on for that same Echoplex preamp sound, and I tweak it a bit with the expression pedal as necessary. Sometimes I use Tube Echo-Dry thru for this same reason.

the BBE sonic stomp is legit.

some compressors, too. skully built me a hollis flatline and it's great for making everything sound just a little tighter. easy one to DIY afaik.

Mountainking Megalith can be subtle if you turn it off...

I use the Elements as a subtle boost/od sometimes.

I had a rangemaster for this and I loved it. Flipped it when I wanted to go super minimal. Definitely a mistake. Now I'm using a super hard on clone for this and dig it. Can't crank it as much as the range master because the SHO gets really crackly, whereas the rangemaster just got more powerful... not sure how else to describe it. SHO works perfect for the more indie bedroom lame junk I'm doing now, rangemaster was better for the doom/heavy junk I was doing more of then. Also had an xotic ep booster before everything. Might have been the most versatile but also the most subtle. I've also used a mini and fuck for this, but I always feel like I'm missing out on the mid gain tones of those when they're an always on thing.

I use a Boss OD-3 always on last in the chain because it's the only way I can make my Twin sound like a SF Bassman.

I try and throw the Pretty Years on pretty much everything. Even at low-to-no gain settings, it adds a really nice tone coloration.
The Fairfield Accountant is another one that I can't tell you how the sound changes (other than to define compression), but I like how it sounds when it's on.

solo tunes:
completed works || loosey goosey releases
associated acts:
Raab Zamboni (fake jazz/real noise//sax, modular synth, editing, misc) || Field Guide (my best friends//sax on 2 tracks)

I make t-shirts, patches, koozies, buttons, CDs, sometimes tapes, and eventually i'll start working on pedals again. DM me for pricing!

These are some of my favorite types of fx... I think most of the ones that come immediately to mind are OD/preamp type of pedals.

Definitely PDF-1 / 2 (I have the 1, want the 2)
Lotus Snowjob
SHO
EQD Speaker Cranker
HM-2 with gain all the way down

Also like using slow modulation that just gives everything a subtle movement / sheen. Really liked the WVMKII for this, but sold it because that was just about the only thing I used it for. In general apply that to any mod: univibe, flange (want a Spectre badly), phase, Gen Loss.

Hell yes dude. That's like my favorite thing. Very dependent on which pickups you use but with lower output ones it's really really cool
