Wave folding pedal?

Post by DRodriguez »

I really love wave folding distortions and do it frequently digitally. Anyone know of any pedals that focus on it? I have seen some modular stuff incorporate it.

The only one I've found is the Soundblox Multiwave Distortion, but I was really not a fan of the only distortion I've picked up from them.

There are some schems out there for modular but I don't know about an inproduction or massed produced stomp:
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs29_ ... plier.html
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs52_folder.html

Also this thread has some good info in it but the main schematic is dead:
http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/i ... ic=32591.0

And, as mentioned a couple of times in that DIYStomp thread, the filter isn't really designed for a guitar input in mind. Not sure of any offhand that are.

I think it sounds best on simple wave forms, complex wave forms it is harder to hear the folding. On synths also the amplitude is uniform, on guitar I guess it would sound like a blast of distortion that would gate into a clean decay, it might sound kind of sucky! But maybe it would be cool? . No pedals that I know of do it off hand but maybe there are some bitcrushers that do.

Yeah you would have to boost the shit out of the signal to get it to sound "right"

The Noisereap Nr1 Asstone produces this type of effect, but I think the builder has transitioned from pedals to modular gear at this point.

Synthmonger made one. It was OK. They had a deluxe one coming out, but dude seems to have had some rough business dealings lately.

Get a ladik input and a ladik timbre (or nlc or whatever) and you'll be close for cheap.

They will want as close to triangle wave as possible for maximum effect. Squarewave doesn't work all that well.

Are prunes and custard, zvex machine, and Geiger counter not wave folders? (Clueless) :?:

Geiger counter is a digital wave guide/wave table modulator (I think maybe it can get kinda close but you'll be messing with the wavetable not the actual signal). Crowther is intermodulation distortion iirc (though reading the description again...It could be) and machine tries to boost the fall after a peak. That's at least how I remember them explained..

Just read something that both crowther and zvex are crossover distortion. It is slight shaping, but different from pure wave folding.

Totally relevant and reminds me I want the crowther!

Been looking at the Marbeau Tridriver for a while, and it has a wave folder. Not exactly a pedal, and not sure if it's exactly the same as discussed here?

Old source audio soundblox distortions do this in spades. :)*

You have to factor in the cost of rehousing them, though

What about just wave folding an octave section? The conventional approach is already spitting out a fixed waveform at a fixed amplitude (and square to triangle conversion isn't too crazy so long as the frequency range is not too broad, and there are workarounds to that limitation at the expense of complexity/cost).

I bought an Asstone on Reverb a while back, it's... a distortion. I can't really offer commentary on it, because I've never been able to blast it. It sounds like other rude distortion pedals at bedroom levels, that's my review for now.

If your Asstone is functioning correctly, it should sound like a gated muff at lower gain and transition into gnarly, synth-like foldback distortion when the input gain level clips the pedal and/or the onboard gain control is set in its upper range. There are multiple Nr1 demo clips on Soundcloud that demonstrate the pedal's capabilities.
