:idk: Pete used a 5 in carnivore but I always thought a 4 for all the type O stuff..

Really though a low B should be like all your other strings just a 4th lower. Here is a test, play on the string above the 5th fret, it should sound relatively the same compared to you open E string as playing the A on your E string to your open A. If it doesn't your issues could be: your string set is unbalanced and you might want to try a different string [bigger, smaller, different material etc] you pickups, low to medium out put pickups [without a preamp] don't always work well on lower tuned strings, your bass has a structural issue [lose bridge saddle, improperly fit nut, screw need to be tightened], you amp need to be something other or something :idk: all my bass with B strings and F# strings for that matter all sound fine through my 18 watt fender baseman 20 [tube 1x15 combo] :idk:

He always played a 4 string as he never tuned lower than C. He is the only reason I have a chorus pedal.

Pete used a 5 string Alembic at one point, which I was pretty sure was a 5 and I was also pretty sure he used a Jazz 5 in Carnivore at times, though I could be wrong. He did use one live when I saw him because I was surprised to see it. I meant I used a 5 because I was too lazy to drop tune. I mean, Pete used a thick b string for his 4 from what I heard anyway, so no difference really .

Also, many Type O songs are in B.

Compression is key to good bass tone below standard tuning.

I've never seen a grey jazz plus 5 but I'd buy one. They're fun... super bright.

Fuzz is terrible for doing what you want from a compressor with bass. It accentuates treble response when someone playing with a Low B wants even low end response across all strings. The best option is to compress right from the bass and then run a fuzz after that. The resulting sound will be like you are playing the Low B harder than you are and there will be more clarity overall.

Im very much a believer in no rules for guitar tones but when you start working with sub bass frequencies like Low B and below (my bass has a low G) there are a lot of benefits to understanding the specifics of processing, your ultimate goal, and the physics issues that stand in your way.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.
