I have a few friends in the armed forces. I don't think my friends are bad people because they've joined up, and I also don't think they're especially saintly for doing so either. I certainly don't hold them responsible for the jingoistic propaganda that's been peddled on their behalf.
In other words. Broad strokes make the world go 'round.
yup, well...guy I knew and kinda kept up with threw out the years lost both legs in Afghanistan from an ied and has since been paraded around the news and all sorts of crap as some hero, but if you take away all the fluff and I mean serious fluff that the media has said about him being a hero...you get an angry grunt who since was young just wanted to murder people and the things ive heard and seen him show off before the bomb blew his legs off was similar to what we call a terrorist in the making....
others where..a rowdy jock who I faced up with at a lunch table one day actin all hard, but he came back shell shocked and a real nice quite person to talk to...another i can remember was spilling all the secret beans at the dinner table and he seemed to have totally flipped out, one would brush him off as a conspiracy theorist...funny most of these guys I had fist fights with aha...
a hawain dude who we ruffed up with was a sci fi nerd and really cool, came back fuckin buuuff and says ''fuck that'' but is going to serve in national guard....and every one else I can think of and when I had a fb account would just post to each other victims of war getting their teeth kicked out laughing about it, justified by the person being a spy or some shit...I mean ya gotta do what ever is necessary when certain sects threaten to rise to power over your power...but god damn
The above is not really up for debate. The more interesting questions arise from conversations that come from where you consider the US's political spectrum in itself (or, at least, it becomes a distraction for talking about things with my center/right wing friends -- insofar as they will dismiss things as "not relevant to us" re: the US's position compared to the more general politics of the globe)
