I don't know for sure, but he does manage to demo a lot of JHS, T1M, Strymon, etc. pedals.
Also, based on his blog/youtube links/instagram, he appears to be part of that scene (whether in a bad way or not, I couldn't say).

You've convinced me to take the time to make a very simple video testing my audio setup. Yeah, sounds miles upon miles better. Pretty easy too. SM57>Apogee ONE>Logic
There are too many things to fight just getting a video made to be concerned with pleasing everyone. (Syncing a 30 minute video can get tricky).
When messing with fuzzes and dirt, there is no one setup that can accurately capture the "in person" sound// many of the pedals are input impedance (or setup) dependent. All you can do is kinda give a feel for the character. No demo is going to be accurate to each specific user.
I can use the same mic setup with no changes (flat EQ and such) and get Totally differing sound quality. Sometimes the mics will start picking up sounds that you can't hear (like stomp switches...And I record loud enough for my ears to ring) that weren't picked up when another pedal was on.
I think the big guys do mostly di or use isolation rooms (at least more complicated setups) with mics more for ambiance. Can't compete with them especially when it is their job (or on an equipment level).
Beyond the basic recording process, dealing with an infinite number of speaker/device/compression qualities and interaction is a fight that can never be won. True stereo can't be had on phones without headphones for example. YouTube does change the sound as do encoders in specific daws (garageband is really bad...Thanks to Mudfuzz for confirming this for me).
The cell phone videos have their place to illustrate ideas and for the quick and dirty.
I don't watch these videos as a moving catalog trying to sell me on what I think I want, but many do. Can't please everyone...Do it for yourself.
I use an oktava mk219, Shure unidyne III (vintage), e/V 664, Lanier sm53 copy (Like it a lot), mxl v250, matched super lux mxl pair, akg d200e, and an akg d1000 into an old Mackie mixer to a tascam interface. None work perfect....Some don't work at all with certain setups.
It's more about the sharing of ideas than the direction of spending power. Varying quality from each "reviewer" is fine by me as long as it illustrates an idea or perspective that I find interesting...Which is my problem with some of the video makers--they kind of just get repeatitive and boring trying to appeal to the largest audience (which is fine, that is what they intend to do...Just isn't for me).
Another thing: being critical in a video format without talking is kind of a waste. Too much text and you loose an audience. A lot of people just listen and watch occasionally. Every choice will alienate some...It's all a balancing act.
If you want an honest answer, just ask around the forum and use those words in conjunction with the sounds in videos. I'm always glad to give an honest opinion.

I enjoy the demos where that dude goes "hey everybody it's Kurt here with another pedal demo" in a Kermit the frog voice, but I usually turn them off before he starts playing. I only watch for the voice.

That's how Swedes living in the country sound like when speaking English. Me and my dad were on a road trip in Sweden when I was younger and when we got too far away from the cities, they couldn't understand Norwegian so we'd have to switch to english and it was Ali G country.
