Dynamic Muffs with Mids

Post by DRodriguez »

I like Big Muffs. But currently own none.

I always get frustrated because I almost always find them too compressed.

All my favorite Muffs that breathed also got rid of a ton of mids.

Anyone know of any good Muffs that are midsy and less compressed?

I remember the Monsterpiece Scratchy Snatch used to come up a bunch in previous forums I've been on, as a suggestion for a muff variant with more tweakability. I've never played one in person because it's a one man operation and only available via direct order (or at least to my knowledge), but the sound samples I've heard sounded really good.

I find that green-russian-based muffs fit this description pretty well. They're usually lower gain, less compressed, and have (a little) more mid range than a something like a ram's head. The OG ARC Effects Big Green Pi is my current favorite, but I've got a Way Huge Russian Pickle coming in today that looks promising.

ALSO: Some muffs have a "Tone Bypass" switch, which usually adds volume, mid range and greater dynamics. The Blakemore Dreamsicle I have (IC Muff) has one, and so do others like the EHX Tone Wicker, some vintage EHX V.4 / V.5 muffs, the W&C IC Pi, etc. It's a great feature.

I'll second the Green Russian option. I have a Green Russian build with a mids switch that my buddy made and it fits what you are looking for.

Changing out the diodes for something like led's or just completely disconnecting them will do quite a bit for dynamics, I'd say.
Other than that, you can also add a switch that changes out the values for the tone stack (test out the values using LTSpice) to change it from mid-scooped to mid-boosted.

I really want to try one of the tomkat muffs with the lift switch and internal toggle that is supposed to make them hecka versatile.

That said, I'm really happy with the muff sounds coming from my baby thunder. "Tone blast" engaged brings the mids back in.

Thank's everyone. Basically confirmed a couple things I've thought. And gave me a few new things to try out.

Basically green russian is what I've been looking at for official Muffs.

Modded a few modern muffs and it made a huge difference, but nothing stood out to me.

Grey Stash looks interesting, always wanted to find a Fuzzrocious pedal to try. And seems like I should research the Pharaoh.

I've tried the TOMKAT Violet Muffer and it is ridiculously good. Just need to try it out again I guess. Maybe muffs in general are just too compressed for me.

Did not realize the ECT was muffy. I'll give it a listen.

Any v5 or v6 with the TONE BYPASS switch should fit the bill.
If it's the green russian variety you prefer (massive bottom end?) I recommend trying its predecessor, the v6.
I previously had a oem v4 and each a tall font/bubble font v7 alongside my v6 (and some other v2/v3 clones) and the v6 was the keeper; combining all of my fav characteristics across revisions.
