i'm always a proponent of keeping the pickups stock in a guitar for reasons just like these.

I agree with you, for the most part, in that pickups are part of a greater goal. But there's nothing wrong with replacing pickups they are deficient in some way. I usually just look for a good, clear sound and leave it at that.

I've been using Duncan Quarter Pounders for years doing heavy shit. On my bass VI's they're absolutely perfect. Higher output than most singles without the overwhelming compression of humbuckers. I recently put a powertron in the neck and it's sick when tuned low.

Been using an SG with Gibson P90s for years. Tuned down to C they have a crusty weight that doesn't disappoint.
