TAFM and Pretty Years and reverb have been the big ones so far, make the in built sounds more interesting. Need to experiment with more combos though!

I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about that. I'm leaning towards the volca for a recording project, but I would probably want to record each drum individually so I can have control over individual levels during mixing. But maybe that's at odds with its performance functions?
I had a go with my beats today, it's limited in sounds and controls but it is so easy to grab, plug in, and start making a OONZE OONZE OONZE beat. I wanted more realistic drum sounds and stock it only has a 3.5mm headphones out so if I wanted to use pedlols I'd have to find my 1/4 into 3.5mm adapter.

I still use it as a metronome and will one day find something that syncs the beats to a DAW and then to a Boss DR. 660.

The beats handles midi easily. Had no problem getting mine to midi clock.
