I'm not sure what the objective truth really is because there are a lot of conflicting narratives, but there is a version of Charlie that is brilliant and creative and compassionate. The Manson File is a much nicer book than Helter Skelter, but I can't claim it's any less biased.

He's been an inspiration to me, both philosophically and musically. I find that there's something very unique about the way he plays guitar, and he pours his whole world into his music. A couple years ago, I dressed up as Charlie for Halloween and played synthesized renditions of Ego and Big Iron Door on Nintendo DS. Probably not something he'd dig, but it was a sincere homage nonetheless.

Despite being locked up for nearly his whole life, he remains one of the freest people on the planet. He suffers his fate gladly and with enthusiasm. No one ever brought him down.
