Basically the existence of ILF gets me through life.
That and Al Cisneros' basslines are endlessly rolling through my head.

Ignore trends (except the ones you like).
Be a shut-in as much as possible.
Always be the driver.
Usurp physical control of all volume knobs at home and abroad.
Only hang out with people that listen to things that you enjoy.
Only hang out with musicians and learn to appreciate other new things and/or have fun arguing about them.
Enjoy your own stunning superior taste whenever something deemed unworthy is heard.
Be a complete dick about your opinions when someone tells you to listen to something you don't like and eventually they'll stop asking.
And finally, yes, listen to Black Sabbath. It's the surprisingly fitting answer to many of life's little problems.

As for live music.. I live near Seattle there are some good bands in the area and stuff. But "normal places" food getting places, stores, bars, places of work? not really. All radio in the puget sound sucks, even the classical station! Go out side of the major cities [Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia although if it weren't for the military bases in the way it would be one big sprawling mess like the Bay area... great now I miss the bay area.. thanks!] you get lots and lots of country loving cousin raping daddy marrying redneck shit which is a horrible mix of modern country, rap and pop
How do I cope?
1. I understand the being not the same is the best of things there is and being an elitist is your right and a thinking human
2. sing along loudly with the wrong words in a horrible weird al like attempt at angering the livestock ["normal people"
3. When ever possible assail others with what you like and when they complain explain in the nicest of ways that you are enriching them and expanding their horizons

When I go out, I go to shady bars full of mostly old guys listening to dad and prog rock from barely working jukeboxes, and sometimes I talk to them.
That's WAY better than going out with friends and listen to them talking about Netflix and Pitchfork...

Well... until we are allowed to cull off all the cow-people [I literally drive around singing "cow people, cow people, thinks like cowz, looks like people] that's about all there is to do..vidret wrote:I mean, what I'm saying is:

Dude, 95% of people are dumb or loathsome.
Fortunately you don't have to be friends with 95% of people.
Just look for that rad 5%.
Blackened had a great point about difference.
But again, the majority don't think that way.
Because they're stupid.

I was trying to avoid taking it there, but I guess it was a matter of time.

Re: How do you cope? (people listen to shit)
I seethe every time I go to the grocery store and they're playing the same garbage music that they've been playing forever. When I was in high school and I hated the top 40, it didn't occur to me that I'd be hearing those exact same songs for the rest of my life.
And, for some reason, they keep making more of it.
But I don't imagine people really care about that music and that helps me get through. They just don't know any better.

When you're at the gymn, just channel the anger into working out harder. Wherever you are in public, you have no control over whatever inane pablum is being played, so why worry about it? Eventually you'll be jaded enough not to even care. But it does make a good contrast for the music you really love, you know what I mean? Without the crap they inflict on us, we might not appreciate the music we find worthwhile as much.

Ugh.
It's a bit like living a double life. I'm pretty sure the people in my office think I hate "music". By their definition, I absolutely do. Hahahaha...
Whenever the topic comes up, I'm OUT of there. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. They haven't got a clue that I'm remotely interested in music, let alone make music and play in a band.
Yep. I've worked there close to 15 years :surprise:

One of my really good friends only listens to Top 40 radio... I just enjoy the novelty of it since I don't ever listen to radio music during my day to day life?

Re: How do you cope? (people listen to shit)
Just remember that the music people listen to is only one small facet of who they are as a person, and there is very likely a whole slew of other interesting things about those people that are not so obvious. Reducing people to cows when you barely know them is incredibly cynical, regardless of how true that might seem from a cursory view. I don't blame anyone for seeing things that way though. That's a thought I have to dismiss from my head on a regular basis.
You'll find music is a priority for pretty much every member of a music forum, but it might be low on the list for others. There are a thousand forms of creative media, and almost no one has the time to delve very deeply into all of them. Those people might listen to top 40 shit, but at the same time, they might see your opinions on painting, or poetry, or film to be lowbrow compared to their own. If you get to know people, I think that you would find it's incredibly rare to meet a person who has nothing interesting about them lurking beneath the surface. It's a difference in priorities.
FM transmitters are great for hijacking radio stations at close range, and soldering up a TV-B-Gone is good for silencing a TV source.

Re: How do you cope? (people listen to shit)
I get what you guys are saying, but I think you are lookwing at it in a way that is too music centric. The gripe I have with a majority of people, is that they're happy to be fed content instead of looking for it. Listening only to the top 50 is to me entirely the same as watching only what's on TV, listening to whatever is on the radio etc... In a world where we have access to a massive load of content if we just put words in a search bar, we find what we like, it baffles me that some people are happy with being fed content an add selling company figured would work nicely to place this and this product.
I have friends whose company I enjoy dearly with whom I don't share music tastes, or movies tastes or anything, but I respect it because they actually like it and actively choose and seek out content they like. I'm actually extremely ok with them even sharing, putting in their latest findings playlist when I visit etc... even though I would find listening to their music on my own super boring. There are also people in my surroundings who I think are incredibly idiotic because the only cultural goods they consume is whatever is on TV and their only news source a commercial radio. If you present them with a feature of most modern TV channels here which is that you can replay all the content from the past week free of charge, they just give up entirely, and fall back to watching something they do not even like. And the funny part, is that one of these "persons" never knows actually which channels they are watching.
When it comes to more practical advice, I've found a bar in town which plays extremely tasteful music, and whenever a place to meet is brought up I always offer to go there. I also avoid stores that play music, which is easy nowadays because the licence to do so costs a fuck ton of money and most stores have moved away from it, though you usually have to put up with the holiday themed CD. As for gyms here, I think it is about the same, though I have only frequented one for a trial membership a decade ago.
Things that still aggravate me is how bus drivers fail to enforce the no music coming out of speakers policy with the young idiots who listen to pseudo gangsta rap or those shitty French top 50 songs that you just recognize as being that because fuck ton of auto tune as a sound effect. I also have a neighbor on the other side of the street who listens to that crap and blasts it super loud with all windows opene, to the point that wearing headphones and playing music with my double glass windows closed, he still pollutes. I just call the cops on him whenever he does because that's how I deal with aggravation, and it's so much of a pain that they usually don't do anything for noise complaints during the day, but do for him because so many people call. He also talks very loudly on his phone on his balcony. I mean I can follow the conversation entirely, again from my side of our street, and there's like 50-100 meters between our buildings. And there's also the music in bars when my proposal to go to one of the 3 I like was dismissed. But I don't go out enough for it to be an actual problem, like maybe 2-3 times a year. I also want to kick people in the genitals when they watch an entire concert through the screen of their phone because filming and take pictures with the flash on.
Unrelated but when I go running, I get aggravated by people running in groups because they just take up the whole space and never leave room when crossing someone going in an opposite direction and I always end up hitting one of them with my shoulder while running halfway on the grass and shouting at them that they're fucking animals, only animals would have learnt already to leave room when they see someone coming (look at cats or rabbits crossing a street, they get it).
Also did I mention people who talk to you at the store because there's a promotion running on something? CAN I PLEASE DO MY GROCERIES IN PEACE?
Also Belgium.
