Recording tips…

Post by sylnau »

A friend of mine is a poet and want to do some recodings of his stuff with experimental music. He will mix everything in Live9.

I already have a sound card which is a NI Komplete Audio 6 (I havent work much with it yet)… what else do I need to record guitar track and have a good sound on a low budget?

I don’t have a mike and I cannot play loud here. Mike (or pedals through some kind of interface), recording software or other things… suggestions.

The Komplete Audio 6 is a box, no? If so, and you don't have a mic/can't play loud, then I'd just record direct with some kind of emulator. There are some pretty decent ones out there... what software came with the Komplete? I believe NI has a good modeling product, though I can't recall the name off the top of my head. You can of course also go direct with pedals etc, but it'll just have a different sound. Might not matter if your friend's definition of experimental doesn't rely on traditional amp sounds.

And FWIW Live is great but I don't remember how good/bad its native amp modeler is, if it even has one. I've only really used Live for electronic music, and for everything else I tend to use Logic.

it has one. i've never used it though. and i switched from pro tools to live like 12 years ago. i mainly use it for recording, it's the shiz.

if you do wind up wanting to use a mic (instead of a mike ;) ) there are plenty of cheap but decent USB interfaces out there. presonus makes some good ones.

far as microphones MXL has made a bunch of really nice affordable ones.

Yeah it really depends on whether this person wants the guitar to sound like a guitar or not. Focusrite make wonderful interfaces for the money.
good deals are here.
flesh couch is here.

+1 for Focusrite - the Scarlett 2i2 would be the simplest interface & I think you can find them used for pretty cheap. The preamps are stellar. Beyond that, you can use whatever mic - if you're trying to go super budget, Amazon sells a line of mics by a brand called Pyle Pro, and they have a Shure SM57 clone you can cop, that's a fairly common mic for guitar amps. Or, like PV/space6oy said, you can just try an amp emulator on your DAW and run yr chain DI into the interface.

solo tunes:
completed works || loosey goosey releases
associated acts:
Raab Zamboni (fake jazz/real noise//sax, modular synth, editing, misc) || Field Guide (my best friends//sax on 2 tracks)

I make t-shirts, patches, koozies, buttons, CDs, sometimes tapes, and eventually i'll start working on pedals again. DM me for pricing!

I would check out the software that came with your interface -- I haven't used them (but I do have the Komplete Audio 6 and like it a lot) but looks like there's a ton of amp sims/effects/synths/more.

edit to add that Metaphysical Function is awesome.

A mic is probably less expensive than having Mike Watt here to record my stuff.

There's Guitar Rig 5 with it... I'll try when I have a minute.
