Synthfarm Companion Synth

Post by spacelordmother »

I know some people here were interested in this thing:

User guide (big):

There was some questions on r/synthesizers about it being fake, but I took a chance on it and it sounds and acts just as shown in the (creator's) video above. Shining a light in there I see what I believe is a Teensy board. Piezos under the bars register your taps and are very sensitive - you can lightly wiggle your fingers while pressing down to get almost continuous notes. The box is very sturdy if a bit rough, but considering the price I think it's part of its charm. The UI is very clever, but it can be a little fiddly getting used to timing your taps to switch waveshapes/decay/modes. It sounds nice (although the output is a little low and a little noisy, I suspect to protect ears when plugging in headphones) but it's fun in that it's so different.

Here's a couple quick clips I recorded with a baby strapped to my chest:

Note mode. Sine wave > LPF > mod verb > convo verb: https://soundcloud.com/spacelordmother/ ... on-synth-1
Note mode> Sawtooth > (too much) chorus > auto-panner: https://soundcloud.com/spacelordmother/ ... synth-sawz
Seq mode. Sine wave > LPF > mod delay > auto-panner: https://soundcloud.com/spacelordmother/ ... th-lullaby

Although I suppose I could see why people thought so, it didn't seem to me that this would be impossible to build for this price which that chip, so I went for it. Aaron was great all the way through answering questions and dealing with shipping. Definitely not your only synth, but lots of fun for what it is.

That's pretty neat idea. I like the simplicity of it.

The initial r/synthesizer hesitation was that it was so cheap it had to be a scam.

Same. And basketball. And the final fantasy sub (except right now because I haven't played XV yet).

No shipping to Japan. Which might be a good thing because I have too many noise making devices already.
