73 Model T Thread

Hey guys, I figured I would make this thread on the 73 Model T and we could just randomly discuss different things about it! I've been using a Pharaoh Fuzz and The Fuzz and Burn Pedals on it with a reverb pedal and the thing sounds huge, with a really growly gravel like distortion.
I play alot of high energy style Doom/Sludgy type stuff on it and I absolutely love it.
What tubes are you guys running in your T's?
My band is currently halfway through recording an album and I've been using one 73 T and one Egnater Vengeance both stereod. The sound is full and just Pulverising! Cheers

I have one with all Ruby tubes in it currently. At some point I'll get around to better tubes and an overall checkup. For now it sounds good as is.

had a model t, didn't like it at all. tried it with a number of cabs, guitars, basses. never sounded quite right. had what im guessing were original sylvania power tubes and some yugoslavian telefunken type 12ax7s. only amp i disliked more was a rockerverb 100 mkii.

I've never played one—I do indeed love doomy stuff, but that's not what I gravitate towards in terms of my own music.

This thread brought up a noob question though... is '73 the year for Model Ts, or does that number mean something else? Just thought it was super specific for a thread, haha. (nothing wrong with that, just wonder how many people on here actually have that year)

'73 would make it first generation -- Some people say that's the version that sounds better (of the original run of Sunn tube amps, not the rebranded Fender Evil Twin[?]) but I've never had the opportunity to play through the two variations of OG T's.

I never really got the doom association. A Model T is basically a Bassman/Plexi architecture with a UL power section. In practice it sounds like a Plexi without the piercing Marshall brightness and easier access to gain because of the master volume. But I dont get why this is the doom amp because there are many many more amps that are bassier, louder, etc...

The rebranded Fender Evil Twin is loud, but not doomy at all. It also has terrible power tube and pre amp breakup. It just sounds like your amp's breaking, and not in a good way.

The original Model T is one of those I've-always-wanted-to-try-one things. I just don't rely on amp breakup or volume enough to justify trying to buy one.

It's because back in the day (i.e. late 90's early 00's) you could get them for reasonably cheap -- $300-$400 dollars a pop -- so you could build a big ass wall of amps for comparatively little money (compared to, say, a Marshall stack or something). That sort of ended when Boris, Sleep, EW, and the other "trendy" doom/wall of amps bands became relatively popular and shit exploded in price about 10 years ago no. Personally I noticed a direct correlation between Pink coming out and secondhand Orange gear getting stupidly expensive, but that's just anecdotal.

The only one I've played must not have been a Model T...it was a 90s reissue that was super cool looking but had pretty much zero breakup. Enormous headroom, insanely loud--closest comparison I can make is a Hiwatt.

I really thought there would be alot of people in here that had 1st gen model T's haha
The reason i personally like the model T is how it reacts with fuzz pedals. I have quite a few amps I've been using to dial in fuzz tones on, and the Sunn gets the most brutal, bassy, and crushing sounds from my fuzz pedals.
If you guys haven't had a chance to try one of these old babies I would definitely recommend you try one out.
Also the 90's reissue amp is not like the old models at all. But they have massive volume and a very nice clean channel to rock a pedal train too.
