I bought a Whammy IV because of the Home Movies "Guitarmageddon" episode:

You guys reminded me, I actually killed my very first MIDI keyboard by plugging it into my sister's practice amp... I wondered why no sounds were coming out, so I kept connecting stuff, and when I connected the keyboard's sustain pedal jack to the amp's headphone jack the lights on the keyboard just went out (I'm pretty sure that's how I did it).

Oh man...what a thread. I played through my zoom multi effects unit into computer speakers for a while. Then I upgraded to a boss me-50.

i don't even know what kind of music he was into but i offered him a ride home from work once and he should me some riffs that he wrote and they were some straight up sludgy these arms are snakes styled riffs. i was amped.
but here's the kicker. he was playing an acoustic electric guitar and was plugged into... get this... his shelf stereo system. it sounded fucking cool as hell in his bedroom at his mom's house.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Dude. I did this. The first tube amp I bought when I was in high school—a Peavey Classic 50 head with a 410 cab—sounded really good. I was then convinced when I went to college that there was no way a tube amp would ever survive being shipped, so I traded the Peavey in AND paid more money for a Line6 AX2 212, which sounded like shit and years later I couldn't even sell it on Craigslist for a hundo. Had to give it away to this bonehead bud of mine. Still kinda think I should fuck off and die for making that tradeDisarm D'arcy wrote:I put off buying a tube amp because I took fragile way too literally for years. I spent a lot of money on more powerful shitty solid state amps, mostly Marshalls and Peaveys and I think maybe an Ibanez just to end up feeling meeehhh.
This thread also reminded me of restringing a guitar with a Floyd Rose for the first time. Those tiny black cubes fall out and if you find them all, it's a miracle.
Finally, my fave comes from aforementioned bonehead friend. He was in this band in Brooklyn called Prowler (which I later joined, haha)—they played total 70s Priest-y type stuff. We went to see them once and the two guitar players were horribly out of tune. After the show a bunch of us said "dude, y'all need to get tuners. Just get the Boss pedal ones like we use." Their response was "what's a tuner?" Then after some explaining, they bought ONE for the band and would unplug it and pass it around onstage. I thought the funniest thing was that when they got it, my friend kept saying "DUDE. We got a CHROMATIC TUNER."

lol. recently saw an acquaintances band open for inter arma.
amateur hour. they were totally up there sharing a tuner. then the guitarist completely forgot to plug back into his pedals after giving the bassist his tuner.

Re: Confessions of a gear noob
this thread is the best. me and my knucklehead friends used to stand in the parking lot before a gig passing around one of those janky tuners that comes with the beginner's guitar starter packs. i would play through my digitech multieffect split into a crate bass combo and a kustom acoustic guitar combo. i thought that was what people meant by a "stack".
two little amps stacked on each other?
that's a full stack bro.
