shipping gear overseas?

Post by D.o.S. »

Hey dudes, I thought I'd already made this thread but I can't find it for the life of me.

So I'm swapping continents somewhat soonish. I'll probably wind up selling off some of my gear but some of it I very much plan to be buried with, which means I have to figure out how to get it to point B most effectively/safely.

I know some of y'all have done this (and, again, I swear I'd already made this thread so I think I have some insights into what you might say anyway) so I'd love to hear some pros, cons, tips, and insights if you have them.

Fedex International Economy Express
USPS

Those are the two I've researched to have the least amount of customs fees/ass fucking

how much shit do you want to take and when do you want it to turn up?

Sometimes you can buy spare cubic meters in shipping containers, which is good if you want to bring a lot of gear. but slow.

Uh I think the only things I'm a little leery of just shipping to myself (which I can do with my synths, etc) would be my OR120, a 1x15, and possibly my basses (two? maybe three?), one or two acoustics... and my desktop (which is a music machine), but I might just throw everything onto a couple of harddrives and snag a new one if the cost gets really prohibitive there.

Time isn't really a factor, tbh, unless it's like a year or something

Shipping containers can take anywhere from a week to four months. They simply ship when the container is full. I imagine it being shorter than four months from the US to the UK. Getting stuff here that way usually takes so long you forget that you have something incoming.

OR120 will be easy, but you'll have to get pack that mother fucker like nobody's business and get ready to feel the cost of those transformers' weight

Anbandon your 1x15 and get matamp to build you a 2x15.
No shit.

Also annoying to pack: books, vinyl, and cds. My magpie tendencies are coming home to roost.

You should pm samzadgan. Dude moved from U.K. (?) to kangaroo land to live with the bogans (am I doing this right)?

Pretty sure he shipped himself some stuff.

Get another one.

Fuck I hate moving books. So heavy, and then I swear a few go missing every move.

Yeah, Sam moved a fair part of his house to Sydney from London I think, but more importantly, he brought a Matamp half stack, a Marshall Superbass and a half a dozen very sweet guitars down.
He's gonna be your guy.

Well I've never shipped shit overseas to myself, but I have shipped instruments overseas and I can tell you this. It's a fucking expensive nightmare. I had to ship a bass neck and body separate and it still cost me over a hundred dollars to ship. It also took for fucking ever.

I'd look into DHL. I'm pretty sure they specialize in international shipping. UPS fucking SUCKS on overseas pricing. USPS is ok, but takes for fucking ever and I don't trust Fed-Ex, but they could be ok.

Sorry if I missed it, but where are you moving? Also, mind sharing why? You don't have to, just curious. :)

Yeh. With USPS, basses are usually too long and will most definitely come by cargo ship. Guitars can ship by air if they aren't packaged obscenely. Anything below USPS First Class is guaranteed to come by ship. Although, First Class packages do sometimes come by boat too. Shit's random. Not sure how it will be where you are moving, but @UCas is right about cargo ship delivery being dependent on the container being filled up and can take anywhere from 1 week to half a year. To that point, I would recommended shrink wrapping any delicate electronics and/or putting your pedlols in ziploc bags to protect against possible salt air corrosion. It's usually unnecessary, but I had it happen to me once out of 100 and that was enough.

Moving to the UK. There's a whole bunch of reasons, but mostly because I don't have a good reason not to (aside from shipping my gear, potentially. ) and they can't kick me out so I might as well./

Just sell all your stuff and re-buy it when you get there. Let the people/companies you buy it from worry about the shipping. Especially stuff like books. Why do you need them if you've already read them ? Rip all your CDs to a hard drive and donate them to your local library or bury them in a local landfill.
