Same goes for nylon & metal washers in my view.

That said, the DIY crowd can roll em as funky as they like.

I believe the correct term is internal lock nut washer, external lock nut washer, internal/external lock nut washer. the outside is the proper functional place for such a device. I still use internal lock nut washers supplied with the footswitch on the outside of the enclosure to keep the pedals from falling apart and coming back as a warranty claim. I use lock nut washers on the outside of toggle switches. pots and jacks get plain flat washers on the outside. you can do whatever you want for looks but that won't matter when you are touring and your shit breaks lol.
