Binding on guitars

Post by goroth »

Disregarding specifics like... what guitar it's on and what colour etc...

Binding ain't punk, so no. Generally I don't like that there's a border around the neck with an unbound body for instance, just think it looks a lil weird. Depends on the guitar I guess, it's just not for me.

I love binding, gold hardware, and inlays that aren't dots.
I'm less of a fan about the look of bright coloured translucent finishes on fancy wood, it can look super garish most of the time.

Binding. Bonding everywhere.

Unless it's an unfinished dark wood like ebony or Wenger, in which case give me all of the grains.

Context is key, but generally yes.

although binding on a tele is kind of like eating rich peoples' version of poor people food.

Cool, two of my three guitars are disgusting.

Binding always makes me think of

See also burst finishes:

That's not to say I don't think it looks good in some contexts, but mostly, no.
This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

Love it on the right guitar. I don't actually have any with a binding lol but it's just a matter of time

Bindings are cool, but German carves are cooler

This.
And no bindings can be cool too depending on the guitar.

So the real answer is watheva. :idk:

It depends on the thingy and the look on a electric. On a acoustic though.. on one hand it protects you from cracking the top if you smack the edge like a dumbass, but it also means that the majority of the coupling between the sides and top are the kerfing and binding which is most of the time is plastic, also it is a good way to hide a imperfect glue seem where having no binding and a perfect seem shows just how badass a woodworker you are.

My favorite guitar is a Les Paul Custom.
My favorite bass is a Rickenbacker 4003.
I have to vote YES binding. Especially love black binding on a maple fingerboard.
