I need to turn my Tele into a doom machine.

Post by ThurberMingus »

I restrung my Telecaster with heavy assed strings and have been playing it in B standard. So far, so good, but the pickups are letting me down for really heavy stuff. I'm thinking about going the sc-sized humbucker route. I'm not too concerned with losing the "tele" vibe of this guitar, as my Telemaster covers that territory better than my Tele ever did.

Cheap is better. I know BLK TRI is the best, but I don't want to pay the price or wait for the Meteorite to get back in stock.

What pickups would you use in a Telecaster for sludge/stoner/doom?

Also: I need neck and bridge pickups, and they need to fit normal Tele routes.

Honestly you might get good mileage out of a SD Tele Hot Rails set.

Yeah I can, but my single coils are pretty noisy/unwanted feedbacky at volume. Plus my neck pickup is just too weak to make the dream happen. I love swapping pickups!

Dave Murray from Maiden uses Hot Rails in his Strat and he has some of the smoothest, thickest tone I've heard from a single coil sized pickup. That would also be my vote. 3 way switch in the middle position with those would probably sound meaty as hell.

Christian still uses single coils in his Tele for the Whores stuff; not sure if it's stock stuff, though.
Good Deal List: bearbeams, pena_55, sonidero, greyscales, ChetMagongalo, xchristophex, Monkey Boy, krautrocker, osbornkt

Duncan Quarter Pounder for the bridge, single sized 59 in the neck. It'll doom hard as hell. That's what's in my tele vi and it gets heavy as fuck.

Dimarzio Area T Hots are nice punchy noiseless single coils. kinda like tele meets p90 but without the hum.

Bare knuckle Flat 50s, with a 4 way switch. So, so, good in the series position.

When I saw Earth, Dylan Carlson was rocking a Tele with JBE pickups in it, the Danny Gatton ones I think, and obviously it was the best sound I've ever heard come from a Tele. Thinking of picking up a set to put in mine.

I seriously doubt that Meteorite pickup will turn your guitar into a doom machine. Construction and DC resistance suggest its just going to be a vintage-style tele pickup.

I suggest this inexpensive set from GFS. I had them in a cheap tele once and they had tons of punch and clarity and really delivered on heavier parts.

yeah GFS can be awesome. really good way to try out different styles of pickup without breaking the bank. i havent tried the lil puncher but i like their mean 90s and crunchy PATs a lot.

I have a single HB tele (I guess a HB esquire) with the duncan Pearly Gates Tele bridge... pretty much spot on.

Always Duncan QPs.

I have 'em in the neck position of all my guitars pretty much. I only use the neck pup though. I play in B as well with one of my bands and the QP does me just fine.

How are the quarter pounders for non sludge applications? I'm very happy with the neck pickup in my tele (blk tri something or other) but not thrilled with the bridge. I want something that can really bring the meat but doesn't sound crummy for lighter bits.

They're awesome pickups in general. A guitar teacher turned me onto them when I got a MIM tele when I was like 14. The bridge pup was shot on that guitar and I replaced both pups with QP's.

I use a strat with a QP in the bridge and no other pickups in a surf project and the thing rips. I can't say enough good things about these pickups. I replaced the stock noiseless in my custom shop Tele with QPs because I really think they're that damn good.
