Re: Bands like the last Thursday albums?
Well considering Underoath and Thursday are pretty dissimilar then it's reasonably safe to say that they'd be dismissed.casecandy wrote:Like... you do you, okay... no hate with this comment... but the "No Christian stuff" comment buggeth me to no end.
If you like Thursday but would not listen to Underoath because they're Christian...?
Also you listed Thrice and I hate to break it to you...
Also, Thrice... outside of Dustin becoming a big deal in the Christian hipster worship scene I don't know that Thrice is overtly Christian.
Excluding some of the religious band stuff is silly though. Zao sounds evil as f but they're way down with the lord do whatever.
The thing about Thursday, for me, is that they're related to a period in my life more than similar artists.
Casecandy has one glaring omission: Pianos Become the Teeth
You might get down with Cursive. Domestica, Ugly Organ, Happy Hollow are all albums that might tickle this itch for you.

"You sound like a burning dumpster", isn't that the highest compliment a noise person can give an artist?
casecandy! Good to see you are alive and still championing xtian post-hardcore.
I agree with you on most of the bands you recommend actually, wtf. I could throw out some I like better than say, Tigers Jaw (The Hotelier) or bands that are more exciting and less known, but then that might get too far away from the melodic core of the initial quest? I don't know what exactly Lebowsky likes about Thursday, so it's hard to say. Plus I don't want to deny anyone the pleasure of draining that swamp themselves.
I do not endorse, but maybe Pianos Become the Teeth could fit [ok, that was mentioned]. Also if you a real wimp, this:

ANYway... No, not touching that last one.casecandy wrote:ANYWAY.
It depends on how far you want to go from the "post-hardcore" core sound, kinda.
In the last five or ten years I think the best post-hardcore bands are "the wave," La Dispute, Touche Amore, Defeater, Koji, etc. but it's apparent you know those guys
But if you're willing to branch out into more "emo revival" territory, there are better bands I think, Tigers Jaw, Title Fight, Joie De Vivre, Beach Slang, etc.
I dunno, I think trap music is the new emo music lol, what do I know

I didn't listen to much of the last few Thursday albums, but you cited Native who is one of my all time favorites so here are a few that I would recommend: Alta and Temple, both from MKE. Hella good riffy 'emo' Native worship bands. The Kidcrash, aka the band that Native wants to be, also the dude behind Science amps. As Cities Burn is really good despite being Jesus. Also Alaska, from Las Vegas. That's another good band.
If we're trying to get all scramzy also check out We We're Skeletons, the Caution Children, Caravels, and Castavet (aka CSTVT, bc the black metal band)

Re: Bands like the last Thursday albums?
Native is fuckin rad. They played in my living room with La Dispute once and everyone had such massive rigs, it was nuts.
Mewithoutyou is pretty great, and not a Christian band like people think. Most of them are some obscure form of Judaism I think? Lots of Hebrew sprinkled in there.
Also try Geoff's new band if you liked newer Thursday. No Devotion I think? Not to be confused with the last Thursday album title.
I fell out of touch with that whole scene though. Couldn't really stay into "the wave" stuff lately.

Anyways, either way they claim not to be a Christian band.

Caravels is probably close enough.ThurberMingus wrote:I didn't listen to much of the last few Thursday albums, but you cited Native who is one of my all time favorites so here are a few that I would recommend: Alta and Temple, both from MKE. Re: Bands like the last Thursday albums?
Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't know some of those, but I guess I knew a lot already. Could have added Caravels to my first post, they were awesome indeed.
What I think distinguishes their last albums is that they're what, more melodic and less screamo? I wouldn't quite know how to describe it.
I totally agree with the period in my life comment. I finished my university studies 10 years ago listening to A City By The Light Divided. Now I'm taking up master studies again, writing a lot of papers, so I'm able to listen to a lot of older stuff while doing it. Brings me back.
I didn't want to start a christian post-hardcore debate, don't get me wrong, I really do like Thrice and Norma Jean musically, and I know those bands were big in the development of this genre. But I'll quote Brian Cook from RC on this. He writes far better english than me

Brian Cook is a rad dude. I remember reading that Post in the past. Can' rurally understand and appreciate that stance.
Did you get into Envy at all? They did a split with Thursday which probably had minimal impact on either bands trajecyoey but was solid.
If melodic is what your feeling maybe go into hardcore//metalcore.
The album Lucky Me by Killing the Dream was solid.
