Oh man, I should not have watched those demos of the Volca FM.

It's awesome as long as you can deal with only 3 voices.

I... don't know? Trying to avoid synth GAS, the Pocket Piano probably is more than enough for me and my severely limited knowledge of synth-stuff. But those sounds from the FM are pretty damn sexy, giving me flashbacks to old N64 games and the sexy ambient stuff by t e l e p a t h. Are there any old, awesome FM synths that can be had for cheap used?

If you're ok with using a computer editor the FB-01 can be had for super cheap, and if you're ok with editing via rack front panel then the TX81Z can be had for not much more. Note that these are 4-op as opposed to 6-op DX7/Volca, but in practice I don't find that limiting at all -- especially the TX81Z as you can use other waves besides sines.

If you're into ambient then I would definitely avoid the 3 voice Volca -- FM is great for evolving sounds, but this was the limitation that made me sell mine after 2 weeks.

I basically want to fuck around with ambient Nintendo soundtracks, we'll see if I take the plunge. Tried to stay away from the countless synth/drum machine/rack/midi threads that have been so in vogue the last year. I should just go and plug in a fuzz instead, as the Ancient Ones intended.

What chorus would be good for tabletop noise stuff? I have some sounds that need to be... sweetened? (thickened? But not octave'd) If not chorus, then what else is there?

Small, light, cheap, versatile, no added background noise, those are all good features.

Boss PS-3. Detune mode on that is sickeningly good.

I feel you. I use a Dirty Doper that I sold on one of the tracks on the new album, and I have no idea how to recreate the sound live without it.

I'm struggling to remember how I did oscillating sounds too. Generally long chains and a chk chk boom... I think the main one that's getting to me though is the Infanem Faye Sing. Expression controlled phaser is the beeeesssssssst. Ideally I'd have a single wah enclosure that was a phaser AND a wah. That could be cool. Does anyone do that?
