Turbo RAT messing with my fuzz

Post by Smarty »

Hi all

I have recently acquired a Turbo RAT. It is third in my chain preceded by two fuzz clones: a Harmonic Percolator (Latent Lemon Audio) and a 22/7 Violet Ram (North Effects). When the RAT is on and I kick in the fuzzes for a solo or beefed up chorus etc their volume is cut even with their volume controls cranked far above the RAT. It's like the RAT is controlling what the fuzzes do. I tried the RAT ahead of the fuzz and it wasn't a good sound so it has to go third in line but why is it weakening the fuzzes? Is there a solution?

Thanks.

You might just be hitting the RAT too hard. What's your pedal settings? If you've got the RAT's gain cranked, no amount of boost placed before it will give you more volume. The RAT hard clips - past a certain signal strength, everything gets chopped to the same amplitude.

Ahh, that makes sense.

The RAT's settings: Dist - 3/4 o'clock; Filter - 12 o'clock; Vol - 11/12 o'clock

Harmonic Percolator: Harmonics - 3 o'clock; Balance - 3 o'clock

22/7 Violet Ram: Vol - 4 o'clock; Sustain - 2 o'clock; Tone - 2 o'clock

I didn't know whether to try sticking a buffer pedal in between the fuzzes and the RAT? I have an old DD-3 I could stick in there. Might try it to see what happens?

A buffer will likely do nothing; the cranked RAT is your volume bottleneck. If you lower its gain and turn up its volume to compensate, then smashing it with fuzz will probably give you a level difference.

It's a little bit crunchy but nothing excessive.
