Danelectro Fab Metal

Post by Phosphene Audio »

Is this a copy of something?

I ask, because I actually thinks sounds good and would like to buy the real thing of whatever it is, if it exists.

Sounds bitchin indeed.

Not sure, but I *think* it's a relatively original circuit, though it might be close to a HM-2 and/or other "metal" pedals of that time :idk:

There is a schematic online. I don't think it's an outright clone, but like Frigid said, it probably share similar circuitry to other Metal Pedals.

I picked mine up for $3, terrible enclosure though. I just hooked it up and played for an hour. Sounds good.

I remember seeing the FAB metal on a "10 Worst Distortions List" that Tone Report did. I find articles like that really tiresome and dumb, plus I had 2 of the pedals. The other was a Rockton Rampage which I use for some sweet Greg Ginn like tones.

Honestly I think the Fab Chorus (clone?) is my favorite chorus. Wish I didn't give it away.

I was actually refering to the fabtone, got it confused with the 'metal'

Still though, googled around for the answer cause now I'm curious too...And can't find anything saying it's a clone of something else :idk:

The Fab Tone is a Boss Metal Zone (MT-2) clone, sans the adjustable mids (more or less, with fewer components). The Fab Metal is a Grunge clone FYI :)*

No shit? A used MT-2 can be bought just as cheap as the Dano version...The boss doesn't take up as much board space, seems to be build better, and has the mids control :idk:

The Milkshake Chorus sounds the same. I think it's a tad brighter though.

This is correct, so is the Landmine.

I don't think this is right at all. I own both and to my ears they sounded different. I did some googling and looked over the schematics. It looked like they used different ICs (Grunge_JRC 4560D, FAB Metal 1 LM833, 2 TL072). I opened them up and, sure enough, things look different. Fab Metal has got 3 transistors and Grunge has at least 8. Caps are very different as well.

I assume they are based on a lot of the same ideas. Using a Boss Metal pedal as a jumping off point makes sense, but calling it a clone is like calling a SD1 a clone of the Tube Screamer. It's just too different.

*Please note that I didn't actually trace the circuits so I can't tell you how similar they are, just that they are different. Plus the Grunge had 2 versions. I was using the original (I believe) formy comparasion.
