Jetpackmods is back?

Post by jrfox92 »

I was on Reverb looking at XP-300 prices because I like to torture myself and came across this.
Space Station XP-300 Conversion for Digitech XP 100 200 & 400 Pedals - Jetpack Mods XP300 - MOD ONLY
Image
JETPACK MODS XP-300 MOD PRICING:
XP-100 > XP300 MOD: $215
XP-200 > XP300 MOD: $185
XP-400 > XP300 MOD: $165
and
Jetpack Mods XP-1000 Conversion for the Digitech XP-100, 200, 300, & 400 - XP1000 Mod / Modification
Image
JETPACK MODS XP-1000 MOD PRICING:
XP-100 > XP1000 MOD: $285
XP-200 > XP1000 MOD: $265
XP-400 > XP1000 MOD: $250
XP-300 > XP1000 MOD: $235
I seem to remember the last time I considered getting a Jetpack mod (perhaps 2-3 years ago) they'd completely stopped modding, IIRC, so this is a happy turn of events.
Maybe this means that GAS will start to build in the stomachs of pedal-obsessed-guitar-and-other-things-players and Digitech will consider making them again? :snax: :poke:

I purchased a modded XP100 (to XP300) from him a couple of months back. Had a scratchy volume pot, but all was well. DigiTech did an AMA on Reddit somewhat recently and it seems like half the questions were for a Space Station reissue. Then you have the petition and the dudes from PedalsandEffects pestering Tom Cram on their show for it. I think we'll definitely see a reissue in the near future.

Out of curiosity - and if this is something you don't feel comfortable going into on a forum, that's totally understood - but what would you say is the primary sticking point (or points) with the Space Station? Is it legal, engineering, programming, market interest, or something we're not even considering?
I've gone into this in depth on TGP, but I'll try to make a synopsis here:

The DSP in the XP Series was a rare chip that used proprietary code. The DSP is no longer available and the code cannot be ported to other DSP platforms. Everything in the XP would have to be coded from scratch, and because of that it would be a huge undertaking and it would never sound exactly the same.

There is also a huge amount of internal cultural bias against the Space Station. People don't remember that at the time it was a HUGE flop, we literally couldn't give them away. Guitarists may forget that failure but, believe me, a business doesn't forget.

Think about this question: Could it be that the used prices are being driven up because of scarcity? Because there weren't many XP300's out there in the first place? Because no one bought them in the first place?

Tom is awesome! I recall reading that post. I always figured it would have to be redone from scratch using new code and whatever DSP is in teh current Whammy series. If it does get reissued, it would probably sound a little different, which is why I decided to grab an OG Space Station and a JetPack XP100 a few months ago.

Btw, I'd always read about how terrible the "tone suck" was on these things, so I did an A/B with a true bypass looper. I couldn't detect shit. :idk: Sounds fine to me.

Roland seem to have finally forgotten the pain of their past flops. 303, 909...

Sounds to me like Tom needs to have some of his wizards just remake the pedal and make it better and not the same as before especially if it was a flop. I'm sure you could get something pretty close and make people happy but still have it be different enough to be unique. Then again I could be totally wrong and just wanting this to work for my own selfish reasons.

I also like to remind people that if you're primarily looking for the orchestral string swell modes from the Space Station, you can get those on the Digitech EX-7. I realized that 95% of my Space Station use was on those modes, so I sold it and got an EX-7 for 1/4 the price. Just an FYI.

It's been a really long time since I owned my XP-400 but there was definitely some tone loss.

Still, expression pedal parameters over reverb is the shit. Definitely an underutilized feature among pedals today.
