shaping my sound, advice on pedals.

Post by larssonn »

Hi, I've recently decided to just reshape my sound.
I recently got a Lone Wolf Audio Black goat and I absolutely love it.
Im currently after that bongripper'ish sound and I feel that this pedal is doing a big part BUT what other pedals would you guys think that could shape it up abit? Noise suppression? Comp?

Best regards!

What other gear do you have going on? A lot of this is interaction between pedals and amp.

Do you have a downtuned guitar and a fullstack?

Lol, Sunn O)))'s pedalboard recently got reposted on reddit:

But honestly, maybe running a clean boost into that LWA Black Goat. Or a Rat. Or an OCD or some other overdrive. Stacking overdrives and distortions into fuzzes can go really far, especially ones that have lots of articulation. Treble Boosts. The sky is the limit. Compression is something that never made as much sense on guitar as on other instruments to me, and honestly, with a few gain pedals going into each other you're going to be getting a ton of sustain anyway, but compression could be good. I have had really good experiences with the Idiotbox Blower Box, and think it's doom as fuck. Smallsound/Bigsound makes pedals that tempt the fuck out of me. I wish Dunwich stuff wasn't forever out of stock.

Modulation is really fucking awesome and fun too, fwiw i actually think there's something to be said about just simple vibrato. I love it. But there's a lot of opinions on choruses and flangers on this board. Also, welcome to the board! Hang out and chat!

Bongripper, you say?

Tune lower.

When you think you've tuned low enough then you've scratched the surface. Continue to tune lower.

A lot of the Bongripper sound is certainly influenced by tuning in F# (you know, just above the standard E Bass range).

Ron has been using a custom fuzzrocious pedal -- maybe do some research to see what that entails? I know they did limited runs of those but they've since sold out.

F# is pretty nuts (but awesome). Do they use six strings?

I think at least one of them use(or used to) a 7-string DeArmond guitar. :)

EQ.

Maybe just get one of those racks and put it just right before your amp.

I use the Source Audio EQ and I use it to shape (fix) my fuzz pedal but lately I've been using it to enhance (fat) the bridge pickup on my JM.

On that note, Devi Ever Dark Boost, or other bass boosters, treble boosters, and assorted pedals that mix gain with filtering/EQing. Moog MF-101 before or after another fuzz. Fuck it all/do it all.

Dark boost into an MF-101 is crazy. You can get some serious sub bass out of that.

This.

With the right amp and guitar, you're halfway there imo. If you nail the tuning, picking the right pedals is the easy part...

PeteeBee and frigid midget, Im on a Fender Princeton chrous combo amp, I cant get fullstacks for this appartment haha.
I downtune to drop A, GHS 11-70 Boomers on a Gibson LP Traditional. My other pedals that I OWN is a Parametric EQ made by NEXT, small clone, DD-7 a HM-2 and then I have a MI Audio Tubezone and a DS-2 but those basically just sits there. I don't even use the EQ cause its super old and I have no idea how to dial it right.

Thanks for all the answers, I've been thinking EQ, but I have no clue what EQ to get or where to place it... after the fuzz or before?
Also someone mentioned a rat to my LWA Black goat, how would that affect the sound? Cause for now it feels like the fuzz is abit overwhelming(I cant believe I just said that haha) and it needs abit of correction. Bongrippers guitars sounds more controlled and fluent.

But I guess I'll get a rat, they arent too expensive and easy to find, and some equalizer, but what do you recommend?

peace and love!
