How'd your fuzz habit start?

Post by kosta »

For me, I was on vacation down in Chapel Hill one summer and a friend was having a barbecue... Her boyfriend had his guitar set up in the living room, so I was goofing around on it before the party. We got to talking about music and guitars and whatever, and he told me that another friend of his had come upon this amazing tone in his rig recently and that I should be sure to ask another friend of theirs about it when he came over for the party.

So this other guy shows up and says that yeah, his friend's rig has never sounded so good and that he got some weird pedal from this guy who lives out in the woods in Chatham County. Naturally I asked if this guy's stuff was available in town anywhere. My new acquaintance said no, but that he'd call the guy and see if we could go out there. One of those long rock n roll weekend nights ensued and I thought for sure this whole pedal man in the woods thing would disappear into the ether.

Much to my delight the phone rang the next morning and we set off for Chatham County shortly thereafter. We drove waaaay out of town, then waaaay down some dirt roads and then literally onto some two-track through the woods until we reached a big old farmhouse in a clearing in the woods. Assorted vehicles and outbuildings led up to the house and two big ol' black dogs bounded out off the porch as we pulled up. The front door opened and this bearded dude in suede moccasins and a purple silk shirt stepped out to greet us.

I spent the next bunch of hours with Glenn Wyllie at his workbench in the hallway of his house. He let me try out all of his stuff (some of it not even in enclosures) and talked about how he got into building and what sounds he liked. He went and grabbed a theremin out of the trunk of his car and jammed out on that for a bit.

I ordered an Ozo Dynamica Octaver that day and got back in touch for more later on. I've Loved Fuzz ever since... How about you?

I couldn't get the sounds I wanted from overdrive or distortion. The regular pedals were a bit anaemic, and the "Metal" varieties of distortion were too one dimensional. A friend of mine suggested I try an EHX Big Muff, and after some twiddling of knobs, I was lightyears closer to the sound I craved, and it's just gone further from there, namely in the form of the TBD and Algal Bloom...sooooooooooooooooo many wonderful noises :omg:

I'd say Lee Ranaldo and Kevin Shields. My first fuzz

was pretty bad, but the second

(which I still have) was a bit better. Now 16 and counting...
buncha stuff...

I was sick and tired of my folk band, and I wanted to have some fun, so I went and looked up my favorite band at the time (Fu Manchu) to see how they did it, and found out the bass player makes fuzz pedals, and bought one. I've never looked back.

haha yea i came across fuzzes specifically when devi ever was still effector 13.
when you could still buy artifact fuzzes for under $50,
and i was confused if it was effector 13 or devi ever.
