If that Odyssey module's reasonably priced, I'm definitely gonna get it to pair it with my minilogue.

I'll wait for the first round of used ones to pop up. Still way excited, still might pick up a new one anyway...DRodriguez wrote:$599wfs1234 wrote:If that Odyssey module's reasonably priced, I'm definitely gonna get it to pair it with my minilogue.

Well, I mostly agree. The Volca beats is the only one I own, but I've played with the keys unit a bit.rustywire wrote:I've been ambivalent about Volcas. Demo units in stores left me underwhelmed in terms of sound.
The spot for volcas in my world is before effects. Part of the "special" about my volca beats is how piss poor the snare sounds, so just distort it and whatnot. It's like a beater guitar in a way...

Yeah, that Oddy price point is like, right where it can be a reasonable new purchase for a lot of people (unlike the $999 release price of the original KARP Odyssey), and it will occasionally crop up used around the 500 point and that is awesome. I would love to own at least A "vintage-sounding" VCO monosynth one day, and this kind of just shot to the top of my list, especially after the disappointing $1200 MS-20M kit.
The Volca Kick and Volca FM are the first two that i've actually considered getting. Might still get, down the road. My best friend/room mate has the Volca Bass, which they got at my suggestion, and it's an awesome little synth. It doesn't compete with every monosynth, but there are a million vintage synths out there with bare bones modulation routing and not a whole lot of interesting design choices that still sound magnificent, and the Volca Bass sort of sits in that niche at a much cheaper price, with a warranty. I mean, what the fuck else are you getting with 3 VCOs at that price? But the Volca Kick sounds like just a different take on the Volca Bass: an odd and interesting monosynth that is focused on bass/sub sounds that happens to be geared towards kicks and percussive shit. I love that. And it fits the music i make, so maybe i'll get one new or used.
I didn't include the new Microkorg in the post bc it wasn't quite as baffling as the Volca Kick. Or exciting as the Odyssey tabletop.

Re: Korg just got a little baffling
People are ripping that new microkorg on YouTube.
The kick, I dunno. I didn't like the sound of that demo, but I assume it would be more of a try in person and my setup kinda thing (snares...kicks are easier...but snares, that's what I want). Then again...I'm terrible with drums.
The ARP table top....now that I like a lot. I hope they keep that mki in production. Love freaking arps

Easy there Mr. Bickle
I'm pretty excited for it, although I'm not sure I'll own one.

Re: Korg just got a little baffling
Love my Volca Beats, tried doing the snare mod but this miniscule components mean I just burnt a couple of the components killing the snare. Was able to bring the snare back with some hot glue oddly enough and it gave it an interesting characteristic. Along the line I ended up doubling the PCM speed range as well, can now get sounds I've certainly never heard out of one before. Won't be opening it back up again though haha
That being said the FM really interests me, followed by this Kick.
Would love that ARP module, but don't see it happening for me unfortunately.

The Volca Keys is pretty cool. My only gripe is that there is no tuning for the oscillator. The sequencer is cool but I generally don't use it for that. You can get a lot of cool sounds out of it. I haven't played the others but from what I've read, the Keys is the best one - or out of the bass/drums/keys.rustywire wrote:I've been ambivalent about Volcas. Demoes and jam sessions I've watched on yt were much more satisfying, but still lacking in that extra *something* I look for in synths. A sonic signature, character even. Where nothing sounds preset-ish. The MS20 has that. Most anything Moog has it. Oberheim, yup. Sequential and so on. The Volcas...not so much. On their own, chained & going direct into basic mixers anyway. They strike me as the kind of boxes to really benefit from a quality channel strip's preamp, eq, filters etc. Gamechanger difference.
This might be the first one I pick up. Will have to check one out beforehand to get a better idea of the decay range.
Both ARPs look lovely![]()
