I like the sd-1 more too, like friendship, I think asymmetry sounds a little grittier and overall cooler. If I was getting a tubescreamer I'd just buy the cheapest most readily available clone (you can get the digitech one at jb-hifi for 70 dollarydoos or something), I think they're all pretty damn similar - tightens the bass and bumps the mids.
They're pretty boring but indispensable for anything chuggy using amp distortion. I don't like how they stack into a rat/muff but maybe other people have had success using them with other pedals.

Maxon od880 and the osd9 are based on Ross, mxr dist+ (this one most closely), and all those others (dod 250, blue clipper).
Also, they require some 2000 ma charge when turned on for their switching (i think...I haven't really noticed a difference, but they say they need a short burst of current).

Just putting this out there into the ether and hoping someone does something with it: a Tube Screamer clone called the Boob Dreamer.
This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

Re: what's your favorite tube screamer?
I used a ts9 for a long time. Stacked it with an sd1 which worked really well. The sd1 isn't as smooth sounding as the ts9 so I'd use the ts9 for rhythm and sd1 for leads.
The sd1 broke, and I got frustrated with how limited the ts9 was - it sounds good, but has a very limited gain range and tone range.
I eventually got an mxr super badass modified overdrive. Cost me $50, more gain on tap, wider tone range, option for mid bump or not, and a cool sparkly gold finish. Really happy with it.
(Also I got a Joyo vintage overdrive and compared it to my ts9. It's pretty close. Seemed to have less of the harmonic content, but a good deal for $20.)
Hope any of that helps.

Fulldrive 3 is pretty cool and does the SD-1 thing as well as the TS thing. I really like mine.
