Picking speed question

sigh...just when I'm starting to get comfortable with some of these techniques, I discover that the volume knob on my favorite guitar is right where I need to put my hand to play well. I constantly accidentally turn the volume down

That's my least favorite part about strats. remove the knob or do some rewiring!

I'm not gripping the pick in quite such a way that there's barely any tip touching the string, like Goroth was saying, I like more attack.... If I'm understanding Voerking correctly, that's what Troy Grady describes as "downward pick slanting," and yeah it helps a ton. What I learned from TG was that if you keep the pick in that position, it makes it harder to cross strings from high to low, so you have to change strings after your upstrokes.

Set the amp completely clean

I'm not a shredder by any means, but I do speed exercises sometimes just to improve my coordination. Setting the amp clean is otm.

I'm having one of those days where NO right hand position or technique feels comfortable. Can I have a robot arm already? It's like I can only get one day per week where my technique is comfortable and not super slow. Fast is out of the question most days.

are you starting at slow tempos (tempi?), then working your way up?

Yeah, but I have to start REEEEEAL slow. Or at least it feels really slow. Usually at 140 bpm, picking one note per beat.

I've noticed lately that my wrist wants to stay "frozen," as in, it doesn't want to move, bend, flex, ect.... If anything it wants to extend (pulling my fingers back towards the top of my forearm) which is what makes it tense in the first place.
