Super budget pedals

What are your experiences with the relatively newish trend of super cheap (say sub $100) pedals available through ebay and amazon?

I've had a couple, some good, some bad, always finding new ones that are tempting to try because they are so cheap.

Ones I ditched: donner surge rotator (really bad reverb), behringer echo machine (dunno why I sent that back, probably is cool), joyo tremolo (had a large volume drop)

Kept: behringer vintage time machine (really spooky, murky delay with spooky chorus/vibrato), caline hot mushroom (good dynacomp clone)

I think all of these were less than 50 dollars new.


Everyones been writing about how awesome Rats are on every forum it seems, so I found a 50 dollar rat clone called the little bear r.attack that's supposedly really good, really tempted to get one of those!

I got a Line 6 Echo Park for 50 bucks, might be the most usefull pedal I've ever played.

Ooooo consider me interested in that valine compressor. I've never tried a compressor at all, and that seems like a good intro

Mooer Lofi: More like a pseudo theramin effect than a bitcrusher given there was no gating.

Mooer E-lady: So far, so good. Reminds me a bit of a vintage, big box EHX DEM I owned many moons ago.

3dpt Fuzz Machine: Worth every penny IMO. Not quite as hi-fi sounding or polished-looking as a real Zvex Fuzz Factory, only runs on 9V DC power, and a bit noisier, but close enough for rock and roll by most accounts.

Hotone Krush: Far superior to the Mooer Lofi IMO. Actually has proper gating on two of its three modes, and the one that doesn't can be perfectly tuned for sample rate reduction.

I have a Little Bear Ratattack inbound and can offer commentary after giving it a whirl.

Occasionally I'll slum for one.

Amazon I've had very very bad luck ordering from Chinese sellers with cancelled orders.

I go Ebay, haven't been cooked yet.

Out of cheap new stuff (since used, discontinued isn't really what this is about as I read it):

Happy with the Joyo Ultimate Octave (now Voodoo), which I've had a few years, paid $30 for it when they first came out. Does the Tone Machine thing well enough if I want garage fuzz.

Similarly happy with the Tomsline "Mario" Bit Crusher, the only micro pedal I own. Looked to be a clone of the Mooer Lo-Fi or its ilk, $35 shipped. I didn't have a bitcrush pedal laying around and figured for the rare occasion I wanted one, would give it a shot. As well-built as any of the Chinese mini pedals, and well under half the Mooer. Don't have anything bad to say about it, it mangles the signal in sometimes fun ways.

I have a Joyo AC Tone and I really like it for recording direct and for making boring sounding SS practice amps more interesting. $30(?) well spent.

Ohyea, I forgot I had one of those too. Excellent sounding pedal, definitely one of the best drive pedals I've owned.

Behringer DC-2 clone treats me well.

Behringer FZ-2 clone rules

I also owned a few of the early Behringer knock-offs when they were first released. The Boss HF-2 and EHX Small Stone clones paled in comparison to the real deal, their GE-7 clone was passable, the DR100 was a defective POS, and the VD-1 was decent enough to be part of my arsenal on 3 occasions. Tonewise, it fell somewhere between a Rat and Muff, and the onboard noise gate was a nice touch. I've been curious about their Deluxe Memory Man and Tube Driver clones.
