Ensoniq VFX??

Post by Aquietcabin1978 »

Anybody here have much experience with the Ensoniq VFX? I have a chance to get one real cheap but have never used one. I have plenty of time on the ASR-10. Anyway looking for opinions. Mostly I imagine my 7 year old will use it to make robot noises and I will totally get my FNM on.

They're ok, but they do suffer from reliability issues compared to other Ensoniqs like the SQ-80 and SD-1. I had a VFXd for a short time a few years ago. Don't let the kid bang on the keys. I'm wary of that generation of Ensoniqs in general. I had an EPS that was the most unreliable keyboard I ever owned.

I've pretty much only ever heard good things about the VFX and VFX-sd, but have not gotten a chance to own one. They're basically my number one "If there was a rack-mount version" synth, but i don't have the god damn space for 61 key keyboards in my life, given how bad i am at keys.

Buuuut, if it's under 200 dollars, i'd probably get it if i were you. They don't sell as quickly as the ESQ-1's and ASR's (or the fucking FIZMO) and whatnot, but they're quietly recognized in online synth communities as a poor man's FIZMO, and one of the best price-to-feature ratio entry points into Transwave synthesis. Which is Ensoniq's version of wavetable stuff. But if you already have an ASR-10, you can probably do most of what the VFX can do with clever sampling.
