I miss drummers.
Drum Machines are your friend. You got that MDUW. Fuckin, roll with it. I'd do bad things for one of those. What's your favorite resonant low-pass filter pedal? Use one of those, into a DS-1 (for era accuracy) and we're talking sludge-rave.

The fame & glamour goes to the 808bd boom...but that 909 thump is the real mvp, all glory due. Through a Pultec type EQ? THICC
Never understood why the 808 gets so much more recognition and love than the 909, but i was also always a techno and trance kid, and never a hip hop and house kid. To me the 808 feels like all attack/click with none of the beautiful body that the 909 has. I could listen to kick drums all day, though.

eh, it's a personal criticism...
me and drum machines I think they need a randomized tempo changer and just three preset beats. I like the machinedrum overall though and it a lot of fun. Done my best beats on it....but still not up to even the shittiest drummer with a trashcan level.
Filters: whatever is around.

Hiphop. It's mostly the hiphop. I think the 808 fetishization is over the long sustain which gets subwoofers rumbling, while many people associate 909 kicks with the overdriven/blownout-4-to-the-floor staple. But when not driven hard, 909 kick can be made to sound more like a real kick drum FME.
Interesting note about the 909s is some have longer max decay/sustain than others, as a virtue of how they were factory tuned...or drifted over time. It's random. They truly come alive when EQ'd and run through a compressor, but already sound more thump than slap.
