Guitar for fuzz mayhem and also some smoother tones!

Post by Bonnistyle »

So mates,
I'm going to buy my first expensive guitar which should be a guitar for a lifetime!
So I already looked some things up and these are guitars which are in my range of interest and which are affordable for me!

Gibson SG standard
Fender 72 Tele Custom (widerange HBs)
Fender dove Tele ( p90s)
Fender Jaguar HH black custom
Gibson Les Paul studio ( one of the ugly worns)

yeah so these are my options and this is also what I like!
I love to do noise stuff with pedals like devi and dwarfcraft! Also many delay, chorus, tremolo etc!
But, what is very(!!!) important, I also play many rock, alternative and indie stuff! So bands like arctic monkeys, papa roach, paramore, enter shikari and also some core stuff..! So it has to be versatile!
Atm I'm thinking of the wide range tele and the sg, because these two seem to have the most of what I need!
How does the tele sound like?
Your opinions?
Oh yeah and I'm also buying used stuff (but I'm living in germany so no offers pls^^)

My bandmate plays the '72 and I for one do not like it. It's attack is really significant and particular to the guitar. It's definitely not a bad thing, I for one just do not like it at all. It does have a wide range of tones and distorts really nice.

That's a weird review...

Devi demo'd a lot of her pedals with the Jaguar so that'll give you some idea of how the combo sounds.

Make it an SG classic (p90) and that's my vote :thumb:

The 72 custom gives you a ton of options as well, but I'd probably swap out the pickups. (You do mean the custom right? you mentioned HB in plural, which would make it a 72 deluxe)

I have one of those "ugly" Gibson LP Studios in Worn Cherry, and I guess I lucked out since it ROCKS the fuzz. Burstbucker Pros are really nice with the Devi ID, and they were fantastic with a Bass Big Muff Pi.

That being said, I really like the tonal quality of the Jaguar, and Devi does a lot of her fuzz demos with it. Then again, I would go to GC or a better local store and try the guitars out through the amp that is closest to what you have. That way you can tell for yourself what is more versatile and closer to your sound.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

I had a Jag HH w/ SD 59s in it and it was a tone machine. Definitely a good choice but swap the pups. I've played some Studio Les Pauls lately along with the 72 Deluxe RI and really I think for the price and for the quality the 72 whoops them hands down. The tone of the Tele is actually fatter and a little warmer. It doesn't have as much output but you could always swap the pickups out. I find that when it comes to low / mid grade Fenders compared to Low End Gibby's, the Fender is the way to go. Don't disregard a telecaster either. Many greats like Dan Auerbach and Tom Morello get some sick heavy tones from their guitars. Of course Dan had some DiMarzio Choppers or something of the sort in his Tele.

So thanks to you all!!
Seems like the 72 custom deluxe isn't that great..sad because it was my first choice :D!
Where to get the sg with p90 for such a price :O?
Yeah I know devi uses it! Sounds very good to me! How does the jaguar clean stuff (because of my little indiefetish :P)
About the P90 guitars..I'm worried about the harder stuff I play ( things with palmmuting etc)
oh yeah my amp is a peavey classic 30! I also play a laney gh100l but I'm thinking of trading it to another amp (maybe marshall or fender like)..

I liked the feel of the 72, and it is a tele after all...I was just kinda mreh about the widerange reissues. A pickup swap is a simple fix if you're willing to spend a tiny bit extra on new ones.

I don't know about Germany, but over here the SG classic is $200 cheaper than the SG standard.

P90's can manage with palm mute...but it's no HB of course.
If you want super tight mutes but still keep the p90 growl you can get something with a HB/p90 layout like the Gibson BFG or Schecter Solo 6 Special
(or just swap one of the pickups in a hb/hb or p90/p90 guitar)

Umph :P I love teles! Got a cheapo tele right here amd I love it!
But changing pickups is not my favourite option :/!
Got some linkz for the sg classic oO? Never heard of this one!
So I guess my choice now is:
72 deluxe tele
jaguar hh custom
sg classic
dove tele (which seems like the alternative towards the sg classic) someone got experience on this one?

Yea gibson doesn't list it on their site. It may or may not be a guitarcenter/musician friend exclusive, I don't really see them anywhere else.

Best thing you can do when you're making a big gear purchase is seriously take your stuff to the store with you and play the guitar through your rig! Even amps can vary in how they sound, so you wanna be sure of how it performs with all of your stuff (pedals etc). You can rely on what people tell you, but really it all comes down to how it sounds when you play it. There's so many damn variables between players even, so make a day of it and rock out!

I have a peavey classic 50 and a Gibson SG classic. It's amazing. Palm muting is fine. I have a video of mine in a video demo of the big muff. I had the oppurtunity of playing both the standard SG and Classic, and the Classic had more versatility.

Ignore my idiotic banter at the beginning... :erm: The humbuckers thing was a joke that no one got.

How does the jaguar clean stuff (because of my little indiefetish :P)

The Jag is the classic “surf” guitar every body from the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, The Satellites etc, had at least 1 Jag in the line up.

About the P90 guitars..I'm worried about the harder stuff I play ( things with palmmuting etc)

A mahogany bodied guitar with P90s has a beautiful clean tone and works well with any pedal. Probably my favorite guitar setup, followed very closely the Tele
P-90s will handle the heavier stuff no problem

And go play as many guitars as possible, you can play 100 of any given guitar (or bass) and one will just feel and sound better, and you’ll just know it is the right one.

Wow thanks for your impressions, expressions and helpful thoughts!
So my question is not answered but I'm nearly finished with the search ;) ( just because of you)
I'd love the sg classic but it will be hard to get it here to germany! IN germany it is not possible to get it (maybe used but I have to look for it) and shipping to germany from the us is always complicated and I have to pay taxes ( damn I hate my country :D )! But it is my favourite atm!
Somebody got an opinion on the telecaster dove custom with p90s?

The testing-thing will also be hard for me! My local musicstores are not bad but they won't have 'my' guitars at all! Maybe the tele 72 deluxe and the sg standard but the rest will be hard to play!
So how does p90s go with hard fuzzes ? Aren't they to harsh for this?
