I might show my age but when I was a young man, "post rock" was used to label things like the early Labradford albums, then it became synonym with Mogwai/Sigur Ros/Godspeed and now it's Battles ?

I'm old and confused, I guess.

I thought Battles were seen as math rock, prog, or just instrumental? Post-rock is a weird genre. Yeah.

Can you elaborate, D? Name names?

I love Battles, but am not sure how much impact you wanna assign to them.

Also, their first record killed me. Gloss Drop had some bangers...La Di Da Di felt kinda limp. Have you heard Ty Braxton's solo installation stuff? Lots of modular oddity. On mobile so not even gonna try to post links.

I really like the first Battles record. I feel like everyone liked the first Battles record, which is why they're more or less an inescapable influence among 'nonstandard rock instrumentation bands using traditional rock lineups' (gag), which is sort of what I feel like post-rock is?

It was just a thought I had last night after I was watching a band do one of several distinctly battles-ish things. Don't want to call them out though, because they were pretty nice.

When I think of "post rock" as a descriptor my mind goes to bands who use equipment & ensembles traditionally associated with rock music, only to create arrangements & sonic textures closer to a fusion of elements from prog+jamband+newage/world+shoegaze music styles. With no vox, or buried-vox-as-just-another-component-instead-of-the-centerpiece. Also highly prone to wankery and 11 minute songs with 7 minutes of filler.

Well that's sort of exactly right. There's a handful of bands that spawn a legion of imitators, and I think Battles is slowly becoming one of those bands, for better or worse (hint: it's worse).

What bands are we talking about here? I generally wish more post rock bands were more Battles influenced and less EITS crescendo-core. :idk:

yeah, do enlighten us :idk:

also for the record - the thing everyone so loves about the first record is exactly what I dislike about it. I really like Battles as an idea and musicians and I did enjoy the last album a lot because...

no Braxton

:snax:

just to clarify - I really want an instrumental version of the first album

Then you will probably really like this record?

But I should say that these guys were really solid live, I just kind of hit a tolerance wall during their set, which is what prompted this thread (which as is usual sounds saltier onine than in person). I actually like this album quite a bit.

Yeah I kind of agree with this.

Have not. Somewhat interested. It's called HIVE?
edit: found it. Some cool stuff in there. Enjoying the skittering textures a bit. Great headphone food.
