Meat Puppets Appreciation Thread

Post by D.o.S. »

So Dinosaur Jr. put out an album today that I have not listened to yet because I have been listening to the Meat Puppets, who -- as you may have heard -- are not a bad band.

Discuss.

That's probably their best album.

If you pretend that Up on the Sun doesn't exist I'd say you're probably right.

They're all pretty good.

Too High To Die is also an excellent record. Especially in summer.

Confession: I've never listened to minutemen or meat puppets other than what friends put on when i was drunk and had friends. Play for my ears the songs that are supposed to get me into them.

You should revisit the Minutemen but I think the U-men would be more to your liking.

It's one of those records I still own on vinyl, tape & cd. Good chance I even have it (dubbed) on a minidisc.
Great at home, in the car, commuting, cycling, skating, on vacation at the beach house. Day or night.
There's something for everyone and it's all over the place yet somehow still cohesive.

Underrated: Paul Leary production

Minidisc: not strong enough to topple the CD, born too weak to survive the MP3.

Minutemen: #1 Hit Song, Spillage, History Lesson Part II
Meat Puppets...better to listen to the albums tbh. They were given spotlight when Kurt Cobain brought out the Kirkwood bros & together performed 3 of their best (old) songs for Nirvana MTV Unplugged In NY. Meat Puppets II, Up On The Sun, Too High To Die. Songs from Unplugged can be heard on II. Latter is prob the most accessible, the song Backwater was all over airwaves for a while there in 1994.

I used mine until about 2007 when smartphones/micro sd card recording became practical. MD was long gone from shelves by then. As rewritable media it was pretty versatile & impressive for its time, useful for amateur recording.
Had an interesting run. For about 7 years in the mid 90s-ipod it was cutting edge, even futuristic tech featured in film. The Last Action Hero. Strange Days. Demolition Man. The Matrix.
Companies who emphasize proprietary storage mediums & strict control of [them] shorten the lifespan of their integrated product line. Exceptions to the rule are rare.
