There's also room for Einstuerzende Neubauten who've sort of made their mark by using whatever they could find. The story was they couldn't afford real insturments, so they made their own. They've used things such as tap dancers, high way overpasses, power tools, jet engines, diesel engines, and the like to make music since 1981, and are still at it although a bit more refined.

They are in fact "playing" all of those there. The guy in front is hammering on a gas cylinder next to the mic'd up shopping cart (the angle grinder gets used pretty heavily back then, too), the one in the back is playing a piece of sheet metal sort of like a slide and hte ducting next to him was used for percussion. To the rear right is someone flexing and sawing at another piece of sheet like a big wobble board.
This is one of my favourite music films ever, and has been a massive inspiration on me making music since i was a teenager. If you like the idea of these instruments Electro Lobotomy makes little portable versions of spring drums, metal spoke scultpures for bowing and hitting etc. They aren't hard to make yourself either, just strings/springs/metal roads, wood and piezo discs. Thanks for posting those videos Ugly Nora. Is the barn a museum that is open to anyone or was this a specially arranged visit for lovers of wondrous sounds?
Also thanks to Chankgeez - that Spell Casting performance was great, I loved the way he walked around the barn like a gun slinger with those beaters
I think my little town had one or two of that guy's peices outside our library; unsure if it's still there. I definiatly remember the weird little rods with the weights on top of them.
