Does this exist? Wah/envelope filter

Post by MechaGodzilla »

I want to try an effects chain that goes

guitar > octave generator > wah/filter > dirt > other stuff

because I can play guitar, but I suck at playing synths, and I think that would sound synthy and cool. What I want is an envelope filter/autowah where you can control the intensity with an expression pedal. What's out there? Are they a reasonable price?

minus the expression, the subdecay octasynth is a dirty octave generator/auto filter. most 'synth' pedals are something like this.

microsynth too obviously.

Yea I instantly thought of the Microsynth. No expression control though.

No I mean, like, the amount of sweep.

I know Subdecay do a few pedals that are kind of what I'm after but I can't remember ever seeing an autowah/filter that had cutoff, res, attack and envelope intensity. I basically want a synth's filter section in a pedal. A few subdecays are like this, but I don't know if they're exactly what I'm thinking of.

The quick-n-dirtiest way of doing this would be something like a POG>a regular wah, I was just after wondering if something a bit more synthy was easily available.

You can control the sweep with the PDF-2, but that also doesn't hit what you want, I don't believe.

Maybe the Warm Star Shape Shift Mountain? You can adjust the 'LFO amount' with an expression pedal.

I hadn't heard of this but it looks amazing. It's basically what I'm talking about, but with an LFO instead of an EG.

Yeah vidret turned me onto that in his efforts to do something sort of similar to what you're doing -- he wanted to emulate the filter on my Shruthi.

I think he's got one (or at least he's ordered one), so maybe we'll be able to get his thoughts on it.

Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter. I don't know how it sounds on guitar but it's pretty much what you want.

You can move the filter cutoff, or LFO rate via expression on my new baby.

I vote for Xerograph Deluxe. I used something like you described just yesterday, MechaGodzilla: guitar>bit commander>xerograph dlx (slow setting/4-pole/downward sweep+moog exp)>nimbus reverb. Awesome synth bass sounds.

Ugh, now I find TCE are doing a Nano POG rival that's got a second sub octave, £50 cheaper, but no wet/dry output (which I like the idea of).

I reckon I'm gonna go for either the TCE Sub'n'up [worst name ever] or a POG and the cheapest true-bypass wah I can find and see what that sounds like, before dropping serious money on a more powerful synthy filter unit.
