Sentimentality / Collectibility – hoard or move on

Post by popvulture »

I've been selling quite a bit of stuff lately, and it's been rad—it's given me a good chunk of cash to play with and get some new things that I wanted.

However, there are a couple of things that I could get rid of but am having a very hard time with due to sentimentality and collectibility:

1. Schumann Lion. Sounds rad, loud as fuck, rare as hens' teeth. I don't use it very often.
2. Space Station in great condition. Kind of gimmicky but still rad. Also very sought-after. I don't use it very often.

So I've made it clear that I don't use these much, but:

1. They both could be useful and/or fun to use in recording situations.
2. There's almost a 100% chance that if I sold either, I'd never buy another one.
3. Value's probably just going to keep going up on both.

I'm curious as to how people come to the conclusion as to whether or not to sell something. I'm in no hurry to get rid of either, but I think about the money that I could use for something else.

The question for me would be if I would buy it or want it again.
If the answer is no I would probably sell it.

This is my main criteria, and really whether I sell something boils down to why -- scarcity, versatility, etc. There's also the fact that I can do what I do with pretty rudimentary equipment, if I have to, and being able to pair down what is 'actually useful' vs. what is 'fun' is nice.

Super true. I love the feeling of editing my board down and getting rid of anything that seems gimmicky or one-use.

But on the other hand it's a shumann fucking lion.

I will say that I don't sell gifts. ILFSS and the like.

Yeah, selling gifts feels pretty icky. Unless it's from just the right relative :D

Value nothing and sell everything, that's my motto. LOL!

On the real though. I've sold rare shit before and never missed it. Sold non rare stuff and missed the crap out of it. Rare/collectible stuff doesn't equal goodness IMO. If I need the money or want to try something else, I'll sell anything. I could care less. There is one pedal on my board currently that I would not sell and that's out of respect for the builder doing me a solid. It's not because I couldn't live without it or anything else.

So I say, sell it if you don't use it or if you want to hang onto it, that's cool to! If I had a Schumann anything, I'd be flipping it so hard, it wouldn't even be funny. Mainly though because they don't exist anymore and they look like a nightmare to work on if something breaks.

Well, like, I wouldn't sell the Denormalizer ever since it was a gift and a one-off design afaik.

I had to sell my ILFSS present last year because of a long stint of unemployment and I am still sad about it. That was such a nice present...

I like to keep stuff that's good for studio use. Though, if I'm not going to buy it again, and it's worth something, I sell it.

For instance, I have an old behringer tuner pedal that I'd never buy again, but it's kind of worthless so I'm keeping it for when I need to adjust the truss rod/saddles on my guitar and need to check the tuning. But I've sold a lot of stuff because I knew I wasn't going to use it and wouldn't want to buy it again (the OHNOHO lfo-controlled feedback loop fell in that category for me).

Every time I tell myself "I'll never sell this pedal" I end up selling it and then getting something else and even forgetting I had some rare pedal in the first place.

I'm starting to move into a "fuck it, flip it" philosophy because honestly I just don't care enough and want to make weird sounds.

there are a few things I have that I will probably never sell, but nothing is sacred, I don't think.

I tend to sell stuff that I know I could pick up again with out getting jammed on price if I really needed it
or if you can duplicate the same sound with something cheaper I tend to unload the nice thing (example- kept a behringer fuzz and sold my fz-2)

I apply the same equation to my gear. I don't mind selling gifts (mostly because I'm picky), but I haven't felt the desire to with any ILFSS gift so far as these were so carefully and well chosen by my homies Goosekevin and Weed_killer

If you don't need the $$, don't sell something you like at all.
