It's generally fraught with danger, even just on the fundamental basis of chugging guitar making it hard to focus on lyrics. Beats outside this context are often musically threadbare so as to not get in the way, so exiting this mode of beat compromises clarity for a sort of perceived edginess. Often rap rock lyrics themselves are pretty bad, especially all that late 90s/early 00s nu-metal darkness/grungey/outsider subject matter.

Not necessarily rap/rock, but Disturbed and Staind spring immediately to mind.
