Re: Who are the musicians you are most influenced by
I don't really look up to any particular musicians, it's more the band as a whole or just generally melodies, chord progressions and noises that I like. I suppose many musicians have influenced me, but it's hard to make a list. I struggle separating the ones I've liked for a long time but maybe are not so fresh in my mind (though their styles might have snuck into my playing) and the ones I listen more to now, but are beyond my ability so I'm not really there yet on whichever instrument? If that makes sense. I've never been one to practice a lot or learn others' songs, only ever wanted to play my own way, but still of course attempting to do some things similar to particular riffs/songs/styles.
Unwound is the only band I can think of where every player does something I can really identify with musically, both separately and as a whole, from overall sound and feel to vocals and just the fucking songs...
So I guess they are my biggest influence. But then also a hundred others. And none.

Brian Cook, Carlos D of Interpol and Andreas Johansson.
Beyond those three, I don't want to consciously draw on anything else.

Steve Harris got me interested in music, metal, history, literature and playing bass.repoman wrote:Curious what kinda musicians people on this forum like to think about/study/appreciate/wind up aping
FM Einheit (and the rest of Einstuerzende Neubauten) taught me music doesn't have to be made with traditional insturments.
Genesis P'Orridge showed me that sometimes it's not just music, but performance art. Also, electronics can do interesting things.
Justin Broderick (Godflesh) showed me to get post Industrial into my metal, like a Reese's peanut butter cup of audio delight.
Bootsy explained to me that it's always on the 1.
Al Cisneros got me interested in playing my bass again, and that metal wasn't dead.

Maybe not in a direct way of influencing my playing, but our own Dr Sherm Sticks is probably the most inspiring musician in my life. Always does whatever is in his heart, explores new methods and is constantly learning, DIY like a motherfucker, and always puts fun before anything else. Being able to break down concepts and atttudes about music and existing in the current musical landscape has been invaluable to my outlook on life with music. Truly miss our hangs, duder
Zach Hill inspires my sense of exploration and explotation of raw energy. Brian Cook has made the impression that sometimes less is more when it comes to bass. NIN & APTBS have fostered my love of fuzz. & Claudio Sanchez has definitely made a large mark on my sense or melodic ornamentation.

Didnt even read the OP.repoman wrote:Curious what kinda musicians people on this forum like to think about/study/appreciate/wind up aping
Dysnomia by Dawn of Midi has been one LP I really try to study each time I listen to it. Truly amazing the complexity those three can create live while also being groovy as fuck.
Im not really sure of the origin of my interest in polyrhythms and polymeters, but that album has been the pinnacle of my appreciation thus far.

What kind of outside influences do you guys use?
Do you ever walk around a convenience store and think about what kind of sounds or music would be fitting as you look at lots of different flavors of Doritos?
