Eh, just have fun. It don't matter. Post shit, fuck it up, have a family, beer, travel, play synths and ring mods.

If I believe I'm a metal head and only listen to dimmu, does it make it true? I dunno, but it might be my only chance at a social life and personal outlet (in the perception of the individual). It's all music, I guess, and it is expression on some level. Any deeper than that we start trying to define intent and the cathode ray brainwash and junk.

The sub-culture itself can be seen as tied to the music, but is a somewhat fragmented different diverse beast. And not all fans of the music are part of the scene and vice versa.

I kinda just think the need to constantly quantify and categorize people, styles, genres to level them into a stereotype is silly and a waste of true value and meaning (and diminutive by nature....equating people to a single feature...a king and his rod you know?). There is no universal "punk"...there are uniting themes and threads but that ain't no rigid structure. It is what it is and what it always will be...ask anyone.

Now Im going to go listen to World/Inferno Friendship Society and Discordance Axis as carrier and modulator and see if it unites the kids.

Also a teenaged Blink fan would probably define punk as fast, loud music with tude played by spiky haired ppl with studded attire & safety pins on everything. Image.
I gotcha. What I mean with the sig (Zappa) is that we've got to find our own way out, and that I'm wary of any and all statements of what 'punk is.' Any time I hear a sentence start that way, I shut down...whether I agree with it or not. Struggling to type on a phone while trapped under a kid, but...I feel like my punk 'credentials' are unimpeachable, and I want to give them away. Just push against whatever is happening around me, or to be contrarian. I see what you're saying in regards to that being the same thing that you're describing, but I'm talking about rattling whichever cage is around to be rattled. Put simply: my issue is that 'status quo' is nebulous, and is hard to push back on because it requires me to agree with other people...which I am generally unwilling to do. I obviously like and respect all of y'all, but I fucking hate feeling like part of the club. So I'll go round and round.

Or just accept LG's wisdom, which is how I live most days.

Speaking of blink 182, who thinks avril lavigne has disappeared and her lookalike stand in has assumed her identity? Why would you subject yourself to that life by choice?

It's pretty punk to list Blink 182 as the punkest band of all time. Heads are exploding over it, and that is exactly what punk was meant to do.

Great article and pick! lol

No fucking joke, man. I was hired back in May 2015 at a college as chair of the English department. Had an eval with the president two months in...she asked me what I want to do to improve the place. I said, word for word:
