PSA: Before you list your guitar for sale...

Post by FuzzHugger »

I can't tell you how many times I've bought a guitar only then have to wait a week+ for the guy to find a shipping box.
You've had this listed for sale for two months, and NOW you're going to look for a shipping box?

I realized the solution to this problem.
I can't believe no one's thought of it before.

Right before you list something for sale, check if you have a shipping box. If you don't, then get one. Then list it.
TA-DAA!

Maybe eBay and Reverb should have as listing Step 1: "Hey, dummy, do you have a box to ship this in?"

Yep, I've been on the receiving and the giving end of this. Learned my lesson though, I've always got a spare box on hand now just in case

I've always got spare boxes, but in a pinch I've got 4'x8' sheets of cardboard and 1' thick styrofoam and I'll just make my own box. It helps that I've bought a lot of instruments online and sold a lot locally and that I work at a job that gets a lot of large items with packaging. I hoard it all in our warehouse, including trash bags full of packing peanuts, huge bundles of packing paper and rolls of bubble wrap. I almost never throw away packing material. Usually if I put something up for sale I get it all ready to ship, then get an accurate shipping cost for the farthest I would ship it before even listing.

I was guilty of this the first time I sold a guitar online.
Two days of me stressing out and apologizing profusely.
Never happened again.

I've got a bunch of guitar and amp boxes up in my attic crawlspace. It seems like fine insulation until I might need them to ship something.

Music shops are generally pretty cool about giving them up if you ask nicely.

Or just go dumpster diving...

Glad I have a place to rant. It's just...you can make the world a better place by planning ahead a little bit.

Even little kids don't set up lemonade stands, sell someone lemonade, and THEN go buy cups. This is selling shit 101. And eBay has existed for 20 years. You know how this works.

Right. Even local furniture / appliance stores at least have enough cardboard out back that you can cobble something together.

I'm even lazier, I pay the UPS store to box it.

No hassle on insurance then, and then I take it to the damn counter at the depot.

Because no matter what they claim, they *do not* charge the same as the depot!
