Modular on guitar

Post by Iommic Pope »

So....I saw the Mutable Instruments Clouds.
I heard the Mutable Instruments Clouds.
I want the Mutable Instruments Clouds.

How do you modular for guitar, though?
Like, there must be a buffer you can build?

Enjoy the rabbit hole. See you in the modular thread.

Alternatively you can build your own rack with a guitar interface module. I know they exist but I'm tired as shit right now and can't think too well.

Edit: Probably the cheapest/best insert option. I don't know how well the gate out will work with guitar strings though.

This is the obvious choice:

http://pittsburghmodular.com/patch-box/

But really you can use a lot of different stuff. This one is just stompable. Otherwise, just get a Doepfer A-119 (or something similar, that one is cheap though) and run your guitar into a system that way.

But I like the idea of the Patch Box. Wish it were a little bigger...42 hp isn't that big. But something like this could be cool...

That's a good little thing for guitar that Invisible Man posted, I'd probably replace the Peaks with a more simple LFO module, this system is too small to probably get the most out of that.

Yeah I figured DIY would be the go.
Patchbox does look like a great idea...

Thanks dudes, yeah the Doepfer popped up in some guitar demos of the Clouds, so I'm guessing its a go to solution.

What about plugging into pedals and then to the amp afterwards? Line levels get fucked with that need unfucking or is it all sweet?
And yes, I'm lofi and basic as fuck.

The patchbox attenuates all your levels for you so you have nothing to worry about with that.

If going the build your own system route, get a dedicated output module. You can just get a basic PM Output module, or you can get something like the Xaoc Swestepool (or however its spelled) to do the attenuation for you plus the added effects loop.

Yeah, wasn't sure about Peaks...haven't used it. But Make sure you get some cv mod stuff, not just a bunch of 'effects,' or you won't really be able to do anything that cool.

Big warning : you WILL think a case like this is too small pretty quickly. A sweet spot for most people to be able to do what they want to do is between 3U and 6U (i.e. between 2 and 4 times this case).

They should release the attenuator with a simple in and out. That way you could save space on the board and run it to a case somewhere else (preferably within the reach of your hands).

I regretfully don't do modular, and this is the reason. I figure a tiny pedalboard is fun when you just have dirt, delay/verb, and a tuner, but the minute I want fun wonky modulation I need to pull out the big board. I figure modular is the same but even more so. Things always escalate so quickly

One Happy Ending Kit at a time is the best way to get going and keep going. I'll be starting my 5th row soon.
I use a WMD/SSF Quad Attenuator to cut modular level signals down to pedal-friendly levels (passive, costs $69 new). For boosting and/or distorting input signals, I have lots of options - 4 Roland FX, 2 Trogotronics, Great Destroyer, Plague Bearer, Warps, Rainmaker.
There are so many ways to change your signal levels, but you might not even have to worry about it. There are modules that will do that only, and there are others that also include built in effects, envelope followers or other bells and whistles. You can use a DI. You can also plug guitar/pedals directly into Clouds, all you need is the right cables. If you want to boost your guitar/fx signal up to modular level (not necessary if you're only going to be using Clouds), the Pico is probably the best size/cost value in input modules now: https://www.perfectcircuitaudio.com/eri ... input.html
