New Swans

Post by Olin »

I'm really surprised by it to be honest. I've been a fan for a real long time and have enjoyed the last few albums less and less since My Father... Some have great high points but the whole groove based stuff doesn't resonate with me at all, The Glowing Man continues it to an extent but in a much more interesting way. The whole thing harks back to Soundtracks era stuff. I like it, what do y'all think? We going to see this formation on their last tour? OPINIONS?

Haven't heard it yet. So far I still think MFWG is the best Swans Redux record, though.

That's the one I've returned to the most. The Seer was great live, but on record I don't think many people actually listen to the title track because it just doesn't work as well when it doesn't make your guts shake.

My Father.. is definitely it's own thing out of the revent Swans stuff and I totally understand why people like it the most of the bunch. It's apples and oranges compared to the other two and I just like them more stylistically. If this is a logical follow up to To Be Kind (there's no way in Hell I'm falling asleep listening to this) then I'll probaby be head over heels with it and catch a live show.

Super psyched!

First time I heard Swans was at the Roskilde Festival i Denmark in 2011.
I've heard the names loads of times, but never got around to checking it out, so I didn't know what to expect from the concert.
What I experienced was a band of sort of weird looking middle aged men, playing one chord, REALLY LOUD, for about two hours.
And Micheal Gira was to most scary thing I have ever seen on a stage when he was just shouting the "JEEESUUUS!! JEEEESUUS!! blahblahblahblah..."-part.

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Swans have been one of my favorite bands ever since.
Saw them live again about 1.5 year ago, and that was awesome too.
Definitely seeing them again on the last tour. No Norwegian gigs yet, so I might have to travel somewhere to see them.

This is such an art-rock start... so fucking amazingly complex, texture-wise, but very gentle... Everything sounds lush as fuck, loving the production... Oh god once I'm better off financially I need it on vinyl to go fully masturbatory over it.

Oh god those high "Surrender" bellows sound massive! Gira is at his preaching best.

The beginning of Cloud of Unknowing reminds me of... jungle for some reason

I went absolutely blank during that drone...

the vibraphone is one of my favourite parts of the Swans redux era probably. They went amazingly into it on To Be Kind, which is fantastic and might be my favourite from the new ones by the way, and the second part of Cloud of Unknowing totally goes back to that sound. Seamless continuation.

Honestly... bass-grove driven tracks like this part are such a validation for what I sometimes do in the band... Pravdica, you cheeky scoundrel

The bass on this album is out of control. How is Cloud of Unknowing a second track? this is The Seer kind of shit, the big piece at the end, the opus magnum of the album.

This is bringing in some crazy expectations for the rest of the album
