The "This is a horrible pedal" thread

Post by Zander »

Ok, so ever since I've been a teenager, I've always wanted to record a song called "Shitty".

Basically, the idea is to come up with a chain of the worst sounding pedals. Now, these have to be pedals that ACTUALLY attempted to fulfill the role of "decent-sounding" pedal. It has to be an honest effort by a pedal builder/company. It has to be an honest effort that ended up sucking. It cannot be a pedal that was intentionally created to sound bad.

Let me start off with what I believe it the thoroughbred of an honest effort that absolutely sucked:

* The DOD Distortion 555-A

Or as I like to call it, the DOD "Fart in a Box 555-A". My best friend (Ben) who played bass had another friend (Aram) who played guitar and owned one of these, and at the time, I couldn't believe he (Aram) even bothered spending money on it. Then I was joking around with Ben one time and said, "We should use that pedal and a bunch of other crappy pedals and record a song titled 'Shitty'."

Ben laughed, affirming it was a funny idea.

After these years, the idea is still with me. I picked up a 555-A a couple of months ago on eBay. $15.00. I still need to find this its proper 1/4", 18-volt AC adapter (yes, the power jack is the size of a guitar jack). 2(!!!) 9-volt batteries will have to do in the interrim. That this much suck requires this much power surprises me, though it shouldn't.

Here's the part that, to me, makes it interesting: Using these shitty pedals, the idea is to chain them up in such a way so as to actually make a great sounding (ok, let's be reasonable, a decent-sounding) tone.

Anyone else care to help with a song that will break the charts and turn all of these cheap, crappy sounding pedals into $500.00 eBay gold mines?
Her: "Why do you need to build 'some more' amps?"
Me: "Because that will make me happy. That's important for you, right? For me to be happy?"

it's easy to bash the ds-1. not my first pedal ever (big muff pi, thankyouverymuch) but the first i ever bought with my own cash. a month later i wanted to go back in time and punch myself in the face for buying it.

but i also find the dod 250 to be an overrated piece of crap. although that may be more personal preference than actually quality.

oh! and the pigtronix creamsicle. that thing sounds like ass.

The only horrible pedal is one that is irreparably broken.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

The DOD FX50, 52, and 55 all sound pretty bad. The tone control works like the one on a Muff but in such a way that it's useless anywhere but noon.. And even there it's terrible.

I used to hate my DS-1 but it sounds awesome in a feedback loop with other stuff. Yeah!

In fact all my shitty behringer/soundbank pedals do real cool stuff in feedback loops. That is your "hybrid" pedal right there. There are NO shitty pedals. I love them all!!!

We maybe not - the behringer compressor pedal is pretty useless.....
