Delay with effects loop?

Post by frigid midget »

Is it as rad as I imagine it is? What are cool effects to mess up the repeats of a delay without going too extreme/glitchy/noisy?

And to anyone who's familiar with the 'sweep' mode on a DL-4 and Echo Park: You think I could get close to that if I run a phaser or something through the effects loop of a delay pedal?

I've got my eye this Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail, which sounds nice as far as I can tell from the demos I checked. Kinda pricey though, and aside from the fx loop it doesn't seem a whole lot superior to say, an ehx deluxe memory boy...:idk:

Can't seem to find more than one or two demos that demonstrate what a delay's fx loop is capable of. If it doesn't open the door to stupîd gnarly awesomness, I don't think I'll want to sacrifice one of my other peds to put in on my board as the delay's beeatch :idk:

Fwd to 4:35

I know people hate JHS, but this is one of the better examples of combining an expression pedal with an FX loop. FF to about 4:25.

Edit: just saw the first half of Echorec's post. Deleted for redundancy.

The DMM 550TT also has a loop, IIRC. There may be some demos out there as well.

Servus pedale yodelmeister has an fx loop. I feel like that knobs-video shows some cool possibilities

I just bought a V1, and it came today. I haven't used the effects loop yet, but looking forward to it.

Thanks. I like what I'm hearing in some/most of those clips, but I haven't come across anything that inspires me to commit to particular kinds of delay tones using an extra pedal in the delay pedal's fx loop...:idk:

I'm thinking that after a short honeymoon, the fx loop might quicky become nothing but a novelty that won't get much use at all. So maybe it's best to not focus to hard on it when shopping for my new delay pedlol :idk: I know I'm probably just really picky, but it seems like the only delay peds out there that DONT have cheesy or over the top modulation cost a ton :facepalm

I'm always trying new stuff in the f/x loop if its possible, just love it. Especially enjoy putting another delay in the f/x loop, great way to get interesting textures going that you can tweak the mix etc. Just got the idea to try this, and recorded a little clyp of William Burroughs with a Red Panda particle in the f/x loop of a MF-104Z. So I started out with mix 100% wet, then I engage the f/x loop, and then mix in the dry signal too. I used a couple of the modes on the particle, going through the same wet/loop/dry mix each time.

I really like how these two sounded together, especially the pitch shifting mode when the dry signal was mixed in, pretty nice discovery :joy:

here's the clyp

here's the settings on the two, but tweaked the particle throughout

I think that turned out pretty good, particle is such a cool pedal. The moog is so dark as you can really hear when the dry is mixed in, that the repeats are already kinda muffled and washed out to begin with so you can't really hear with good definition the particle's effect....which is pretty cool.

But, I just recorded this clyp of David Lynch with the particle in the f/x loop of a Strymon Timeline so you can hear with digital clarity how it sounds. I went through all the modes of the particle in order and just tweaked the parameters till it sounded kinda cool and then went to the next mode.

Sounds really fucking cool in some settings, kinda neat being able to dial in the time/feedback settings on the "main" delay to effect the signal the f/x loop delay affects....really need to explore that relationship.

here's the clyp
https://clyp.it/hguifn4d
EDIT: turns out this wasn't wired correctly so not really in the f/x loop i don't think?

I may be in the minority here but I am not crazy about using effect loops with delays. I enjoyed putting the Wizard of Pitch into the bellweather loop, but couldn't use it for anything other than noise drones. Idk. I'm sure they're awesome for other people, just not for me.

I don't think the GJENGANGAR has a loop where the repeats are effected, its kind of put on top of everything if I remember correctly from the version I had, so it didn't really behave like more traditional delays with loops where the effect is put on the repeats. It was cool but different, I think it was kinda there so you could use focus the gate on the pedal with other effects.

The Yodelmaster is a really nice delay but very, very dark. Its hard to hear the repeats on it really. Good for more atmospheric stuff with long times, lots of feedback and modulation.
