Afterneath vs Dark Star reverb

Post by Somnambulance »

Anyone have experience with both? I play bass and the Afterneath has been my longest lasting pedal on my board for like two years now. I've always wanted to try the Dark Star though.
Listen, the WORLD is my board. All of the pedals are on it, just out of my reach..

I'm pretty sure the Afterneath was released less than two years ago :)

"Always" is a pretty long time to want a pedal that's only been out a few months too! However, they're not really similar pedals at all to be honest. The Dark Star is great for massive pad reverbs and atmospheric, soundtrack-like tones. Afterneath is more versatile but can't do the things the Dark Star can. If you get a Dark Star, don't expect it to do much outside of what you've heard in demos.

I'm not sure. I didn't like the Afterneath. I tried it twice and thought it was too metallic and odd for a reverb. I like my reverbs pretty straight forward though. The Dark Star sounds nice, but I think there are a million other reverbs that sound way better. Just my opinion.

Are both FV-1s? My go-to verb for bass is the BitQuest. Retains lows, sounds huge, lush modulation, dirt mode. :thumb:

I've tried both and never really got along with them although the Afterneath sounded cool when paired with certain effects.
Didn't like how the Dark Star sounded after dirt

this is my experience with it. If you hear a sound in one of the demos that you feel you can use, that's what it will be good for. It might just be me but it was also super tricky to tune.

This too, even with the reverb mixed out it filters a bit of highs and muffles some mids.

BitQuest verb is excellent, with guitar too!

I'll have a RM-1N, BitQuest, Dark Star and Procession on my PT-1. Is that enough verbs?

No, there's no amp in there - tone fairies and feedback goblins live inside this box.

I've got both. I think they're pretty different from one another but if I could only have one it would be the Afterneath. Not because the Dark Star isn't great but the Afterneath is one of my all time favorite verbs
